Car buying and pets

Did you think about your pets and hauling them when you purchased your car?

Did you buy new or used?

I am in the market (I think) for a new car w/better gas mileage for 1 hour commutes (80 miles round trip).  I hate car payments though and haven't had one for about 2 years.  Ten months ago, I bought a used Kia Sephia  (34,000 miles) for $1700 but the gas mileage SUCKS! Hondas and Toyos are so expensive used ..I might as well get a new car although the depreciation...yada yada.

I think I want a Scion XA.  I like hatchbacks and need something small, 5 speed that can hold a dog and a pet or two or three.

Soon okay maybe later I want to live in the country and have a great dane or maybe a dogue...I will need the room I guess.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!!!

If you want a Great Dane in the near future, you had better get something bigger.  I got a mini-van after I got my dane years ago.  When I initially got him I had a 2 door Duster & although it was funny, I got tired of seeing my daughter sitting in the front seat with a bath towel draped over her head because Samson while in the backseat would drool on her head!

Random I know but Kia's suck I wouldnt recomend that car to anyone. I owned a used honda thing (seriously all I know, my car knowledge bites) but I sold it cuz I cant get into a car without having a panic attack now (long story).

Really... I am sorry to hear that.

Your Kia experience sucked too?  The car serves its purpose for the time being but I mean I am going to end up giving it away for like $500. The cars have absolutely no value. LOL!

As far as cars go. I have a 94 Buick Roadmaster with a V8. Granted it is a large car but it gets 27MPG on the highway and 24-25 in the city. I would susgest looking up cars that you like. There are millions of reviews online you can read and they usually give you the MPG also. I know where I live I will never own a small car, then again with 3 kids and 5 dogs a small car is out of the question.

I would suggest a Plymouth Voyager mini van. Ours has the two bench seats, so we can ride a lot of both two and four legged people. Also, the seats come out, so I can haul crates, food, etc. (We have a food storage system and usually buy in bulk.)

4 cylinders, great gas mileage, just tall enough to change the oill without ramps,.....

Ours is now 10 years old and we bought it used. Money well spent.

oh wow! I had a horrible kia experience as welll! One problem or another from beginning to end. I finally traded it in and got almost NOTHING for it and i'm still paying off the negative equity!!! What a horrible experience.

On a better note, when I traded in my kia i got a saturn vue and i love it. Ive had it for 3 years now with not one single probllem and i put ALOT of miles on my car as I drive all over the state. Gas is average and there is alot of space. And they are more affordable than the honda/toyota suvs (at least i think so b/c they were three years ago--coudl be different now lol).

Good Luck in the search!

Tyson, my wife and I just bought a 2005 Chrysler T&C Van. Both middle and back row seatrs fold into the floor. A first in minivans. The gas mileage is pretty good on the freeway. About 25+ mpg. About 18 in town if I drive, less if my wife drives. (She tends to have a lead foot). We got it specifically for going to dog shows. What we won't do for our pets! You might look at a Chrysler PT Cruiser. I heard the hold quite a bit and get decent mileage. We also thought about a station wagon (VW Jetta or something like it). Just some ideas.

When I got my car, I actually brought a dog crate along to make sure it would fit in the trunk.  I'm weird; I prefer the bulky plastic crates to the wire ones because the plastic is so much lighter.  The sales guy thought I was nuts, but I didn't have any rude awakenings when I got the car home.

If you plan on getting a car instead of a van and plan on hauling any large pieces of pet equipment, you may want to bring the equipment with you when you go to look at cars.

Anytime that I see a car, I mentally measure how many dogs would fit in it.
Hondas get the best gas mileage.

I have a 2002 4 door chrysler sebring and I hate it. I will never buy another chrysler car. But it does get good gas mileage. I put 400 miles or more a week on it and only spend 30-40 in gas. And Oscar fits perfectly in it, and he weighs close to 160.
