Okay an actual pet post. How often do you bathe your dog? Oscar only gets two baths a year. I know that doesn't sound like enough, but he never stinks. I guess because he is only outside a total of 20 minutes a day. Plus too many baths is bad for is coat and skin. I was just wondering if there is someone that hardly gives their dogs baths just like me.
Well, Russells have to have less baths because it softens their coats too much. My mom gets asked this question a lot (she's a groomer) and she tells the people dogs need baths every couple weeks. Not full grooming (like trimming) but a simple bathing. I think it matters more how much they are outside and how dirty they get.
I give mine a bath once a month. I don't bathe that often in the winter. I think it dries out their skin to much. They mostly only get a bath in the colder weather if it has been raining and it is very muddy and they get gross.

Mine all get one about once a month unless they really stink, then they will get more. The only reason they would really stink is cause we go to the dog park everyday, so they tend to get dirty. I hate it when you pet a dog and your hands feel grimy(sp?) after. I also use a colgne spray on them whenever guests come. :)
i have given Calvin 2 baths since he has lived with me. He has been with me since 2-26-05 . He is always rolling around in the dirt. LOL I can vever tell if he has dry skin or if it is dirt and stuff.
I couldn't imagine having to bathe Oscar every other week. He doesn't know it but he is due for a bath any day now. He hates getting wet. I know my sister used to bathe her mastiff every two weeks and her skin dryed out really bad.
One must condition the coat and use a proper Shampoo. I'd never touch most 'dog' shampoos with a ten foot pole. Horrid stuff, I see more dried cracked crafed skin from over use of dog shampoos. The whole Ph thing is also BS.
I use human shampoo and have for the last 18 years.
wow i didnt know you could use human shapoos! I hate dog shapoos they stink LOL I use tresseme' in my hair. I use the conditioning kind with vitamin and etc.. and also use the conditioner too. Is it safe for dogs?
I also use my shampoo on Oscar. I think it makes him smell and he is so much softer than if I use dog shampoo. Do you use conditioner on your dogs. I use it on Oscar. My mom always told me that people shampoo was bad for the dogs but I told her that if it was bad for them then I guess I shouldn't be using it either.
I rarely wash my dogs...just try and have them groomed every 6-8 weeks. I admit, they do need a bath if I am pushing it to 8 weeks. Icy- that is interesting about the human shampoo. My vet said not to use. I can't remember why. What kind of human shampoo do you use? Thanks
Chuckle, many groomers use human shampoos and dish soap, espcally on truely dirty dogs. Hylite shampoo is great on people.
Anyway, yes I shampoo and condition. My cream gets pantene smooth and silky, the blacks get herbal essence atm, sometimes mane and tail. I love mane and tail for puppies, really moisturizes their little puppy coats and mane and tail is great for dogs who have dry skin as well, and you don't need to condition them if you don't espcally on short coated dogs like danes and boxers, when I take my dogs to my clinic job my friend always steals my shampoos for the dogs with tangles and stuff sicne i use pretty heavy rich conditioners.
I use human shampoo also. I only use conditioner on the long haired ones. The conditioner would probably be good for all of their skin, I've just never done it. I use the Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner for babies. That way I don't have to worry about it burning their eyes so bad if I accidentally get it in there.

I use to use the mane and tail on myself. During my high school days it was believed that the mane and tail made your hair grow faster. Sheesh! We'll believe anything.
I've never used it on the dogs. Maybe I'll try it.

Farley & Chloe get a bath about every 8 wks when they go for grooming. One great thing about poodles is that if they get wet & dirty outside once they dry I have found they clean up with just a brushing. If they get really dirty & we are heading somewhere & I don't have time to let them completely dry & brush them then I will give them a quick bath with oatmeal shampoo.
