Our brown Standard Poodle, Kisses, has been not feeling well over the last couple of days and not eating for 3 or 4. She's already thin, but yesterday it became clear that she was definitely not feeling well. She went to the vet today and we were told that she has some type of bacterial infection which has caused swelling in her lymph nodes in her neck (no wonder she hasn't been eating). She has been put on two antibiotics, so we hope that will help and she goes in for a re-check on Monday. Keep your fingers crossed X.
We did find out that she's 42.5 lbs, which is more than we thought. Last time she was at the vet she was 37 lbs.

Lymph nodes are wonderful little glands in our bodies. They can alert us when our bodies are sick. Normally, the lymph nodes that are nearest to the affected area will be the ones to swell. In a sense, they 'pull' the sickness from our bodies and keep it inside them. This even happens with cancer. Most of the time, in breast cancer, the lymph nodes under your arm will pull the cancer into them. If caught early, it can be a blessing because you may not have to have your breast removed (they will remove the infected glands instead), however, being that the lymphatic system is completely linked throughout our bodies, if its not caught early the cancer can spread throughout your whole body.
I really don't know why I just went into all of that....lol.....I guess it was because ltlgto noticed the problem and had it checked immediately. We should do that, even with our human bodies.
Ansy, I don't know why you went into all that either? But more info never hurts. I know when I had cancer in the back of my shoulder, the first thing they did was to check my lungs and lymph nodes around my armpit. Thank goodness it hadn't spread, especially considering I'd probably had it for about 9 years. (DFSP = Dermato Fibroma Sarcoma Protuberance)
No she isn't a show dog, but has the best conformation of all of our standards. With her eye injury from being bit in the head at 8 weeks, that was pretty much an automatic stop to any showing. She has always had a problem keeping weight on also. She is a very finicky eater with lots of energy. This morning she just looked so thin.
We've had all kinds of blood work and things done on her because of her weight, and the vets have pretty much said it's just the way she is. I'd say she's lost at least 3-5 lbs in the last few day, and it really shows. But it also means she was up from 37 lbs. to probably about 45lbs.

It was a very long night for me and her. I slept with her in our spare bedroom. She usually lays between my legs on top of the covers. At about 12:30am, I woke up to her whimpering. I tried to sooth her. At 1:30am, I got out from under the covers and layed next to her and wrapped us in the blanket. I petted her the whole time until we finally fell asleep around 4:30. Woke up to whimpering again at 5:30. She couldn't pick her head up (I think her neck had stiffened up), and when I tried to help her she cried. The swelling in the left side of her neck was a little worse. I didn't know how to get her off the bed. My wife finally helped me as she held her head and I picked up her body at the same time. We got her up and I carried her out to the family room. She was up and on all four then and went straight to her crate. I don't think the antibiotics have kicked in yet, and I know she is having pain in her neck. It's devastating me right now to see her like that, and pray that she will feel better soon.

Oh I'm so sorry. I hated it when Oscar was sick. He had Erichilia(sp) and he lost so much weight from it. He got down to 128 when his normal weight is somewhere around 160. Hope Kisses feels better soon. Is there some sort of warm neck wrap you can put on her neck to loosen it up. Don't know how much it would actually help though. I know when I have been stiff a warm compress helped for me. Sending prayers your way.
Thanks Paige. I don't know if it's stiff, or it's just from the infection in her lymph nodes. I might try the warm compress though. I really hope the medicine helps soon. She has a re-check scheduled for Monday, but I told my wife we'll see how she does tonite and tomorrow morning, and see if we need to take her Saturday instead.

Ask the vet if you can give her 1/2 a buffered aspirin for the pain. As soon as she is off the antibiotics, or sooner, get her eating the Nutro Ultra, puppy food. The canned stuff is good when they are finicky, the kibble has a tiny pellet size, both have a pleasant scent, not trash smelling like some foods. The good bacteria in it will combat the bad ones in her body, and replace them with a clean enviornment that they cannot live in. They will also help her digest her food. I give the puppy food to dogs of all ages, esp. older, weak, or baby dogs. It is truely the best food out there.
