I've been working on the jumping issue with Koda (lab/poodle mix) since day 1. While many dogs jump on people, I have NEVER in my life had a dog that gets SO excited to see new people. She literally can't contain herself with excitement. I just can't seem to find anything that works with her. I give her lots of excerise (2 long walks a day and they have a big fenced in yard), we don't pet her if she jumps on us, we don't reward jumping in anyway--you name it we've done it. Its worked like a charm with Harry--he will calmly sit until you pet him and he learned this very quickly (of course he's still not potty trained so i guess its a trade off LOL). We even have a training collar for Koda and I give her corrections when she jumps on people. I'll correct her jumping/pulling, put in her a sit/stay, but then she will move from the stay before I've released her and try to jump again!
She doesn't jump on us anymore, we've gotten her out of that habit, but the problem is with anyone who comes over. Since she is getting bigger and verbal commands are NOT working, I've been keeping her on a leash with the training collar when people come over and correcting her when she jumps. Its just NOT sinking in. I'm not sure what to do--i've done everything (at least I think) so as not to reward her for jumping behavior, but Im just not sure how to break this habit. Because I don't let anyone pet her until she is calm and not jumping she unfortunatley never gets any attention (and Harry gets tons) which seems to make her MORE excited. I'm not sure how to handle this and I really want to fix it because its getting to the point where I don't even want people coming over! LOL
Anyway, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
PS--during obedience class my trainer told me to try gently kneeing her in the chest when she jumps, putting her in a sit/stay and then petting her. That has seemed to work for her jumping on us, but I'm not going to tell guests (especially children) who come to our house to do that.
Your gonna hate this... Did your mom ever hang your dad's belt on the door, and point at it and say, are you gonna be good, or do you want the belt? I do not really remember anything other than the threat, I was not spanked much. I have a horse quirt called a popper, or bat. If slapped on bare human flesh, it makes noise, but hardly stings. We used to slap the horse on the butt with one to give him the cue for lift, when we took 5ft. jumps. Well, I hold this in my hand when I mean business. It gives you a reach of 2ft, doesn't hurt and is a better visual deterrant than your hand swatting ineffectually. I usually don't need it, just sometimes the rowdiness gets dangerous and out it comes, it sits on the way to the back door. Usually, I just say do you want me to get my stick? and that ends the wildness...Call it my visual aid. It is also good for teaching heeling, teaching the dog to stay back, and to the side, instead of pulling, but I rarely take it out in public...Not enough people know horse equipment, and they would be concerned...
Meg..Im sorry your at witts end..I would be too..I usually shove mine off when it happens..but we rarly get company or if we do i crate my crew...so I dont have any real tips..I had in the past did the chest knee thing and that worked on our one shepherd..But..I am not an expert..I did have her trainer at the time tell me to reinforse that if she did jump..and we have..My propblem is my husband lets the dogs jump at times and I dont..so..I have what is called an UNTRAINER...So..my poor pets are confused..and he is the "treat man" and I seem to look like the bad guy all ways around..I have been visiting a sites called http://www.dogproblems.com it has some good tips too..I wish you the best..Keep us posted on what ends up working..

Kitty your post made me laugh so hard. To this day if I do something wrong I worry that I might get a "whoopin" and Im 26 years old! And i never actually got a whoopin--but the threat was enough!
Huron--i have a sneaking suspicion that hubby is also acting as the "untrainer." When he is around me he tells them no etc--but I was just at my neighbors and they made a comment about how I seem to be the disciplinarian (as opposed to hubby). And I know that he LOVES it when they jump on him, so its not natural for him to correct them. NOT that tahts an excuse LOL! So--i'll have to start re-training him as well!!!
Pits, thank you so much for those links. I never even knew they made no jump harnesses! Did you have luck with yours? Im assuming so. Thanks again--i'll probably order one.
I'll keep everyone posted!!! thansk for the replies
yes it works well at least from my expierence with them

Now how come I've not seen you lab poo mix. Can I see? Does he look like a terrier like some I've seen or like a thicker poodle?
How old is your dog? My terrier used to do that alot, and took me alot of time to cure. Still on occasion. What took long was my hubby coming home and allowing him to do it. Had to tell him he needs to come together with me and teach him the same thing. Is everyone on the same page in your home about teaching what needs to be done? That helps alot. If he's young, it sometimes takes some aging and maturity to happen. Now all I have to do is put my hand out and he does not jump.
Puttin, thanks for the chance to show off my pups!!
Koda is 7 months old and I definetly think you are right that it might be inconsistency from other members of the family (ie--HUBBY). We actually had a bunch of people over today and koda was really jumpy in the beginning but I told everyone to not touch her until she is sitting and she actually started to show some improvement throughout the day. I took her off the leash and would correct her verbally and she actually was starting listen to the verbal commands with no leash correction necessary. THere could be hopet yet! LOL She knows that she wont get love until she is sitting, so she sits and sort of squirms around because she is just SO eager to get attention! Its really quite funny!
anyway, thanks again all for the suggestions! Ill keep everyone posted on her progress :)
They are so cute. are they both lab poo mix? Koda has a very interesting look. Her coat may change too as she gets older. Its a poodle thing. Yep keep the family all on the same page and things will work out. Now trying to get my small mini to stop boiing all over the place is my next step. Poodles, little ones just get so excited and start hopping around. She's 7 1/2 months.
Thanks puttin!! Harry is a lab/poo mix for sure--but Koda we are 90% sure. We know her mom was a black lab and her and her littermates had that "poo" look so we kind of assumed she was a poodle mix. Also she doens't shed (as of right now) and hubby is not allergic, which is another reason why we think there is poodle in her. Her coat is definetly changing though--its becoming curlier every day and she is sprouting grey/white hairs all over the place!!!
harry on the other hand has very very soft fur but absoutley no curl to it at all. He, on the other hand, sheds like CRAZY (at least right now) but for some reason hubby has no allergy problems Who knows!!! You really never know with the poo mixes what you will get! Or with any mixes for that matter.
thanks again puttin for the advice, and to everyone else!
any luck on the jumping issue? Did you get a no jump harness yet or have you decided to go a different rout?

We actually had a bunch of people over this weekend and while jumping was still an issue I think we made some progress! I am going to get a no jump harness as well I think. Hubby is supposed to get one on Wednesday because he will be in the area where there is a Petsmart. We have a Petco right down the road but its always so much more expensive there. I'll keep you posted on how its working!
np but understand if you don't keep on them they will 9 out of ten times chew it off lol. I have sewn and resewn them and when they are beyond repair I save the hardware and make a new one lol.
