Yesterday, we took 2 of our Standard Poodle pups to the vet for their health certs. to fly to their new homes. Everything went well. Pronounced very healthy, and the vets office crew loved them. I went back to work and my wife went home, and one of our toys who was due in a day or two had her pups as soon as my wife walked in the door. The first out was a still born female. While my wife worked on her, the next on, a boy, whelped. She called the vet and took them right away. The vet said the still born females placenta had probably detached from the uterus a few days previously, and there was nothing we could do. She was worried about the boy also. He seemed very weak, and wasn't suckling. We took mom and boy home. Tried to bottle feed and he couldn't. He made it through the night but passed away this morning shortly after I had dropped them off at the vet. (I had to go to work and my wife had to take the Spoo pups to the airport) This is the first puppies we have ever lost. The vet said there was no real reason. She also told us that the avarage number of pups to make it to weening is only about 65%. That really shocked me. She also said that the boy may have had brain problems because he had probably been out of oxygen for some amount of time so its probably for the best that he didn't survive. But it doesn't make it any easier. The two boys that flew out today will be missed also. They were really dolls, but thier new families are really excited to get them and they are both great homes. One in Kentucky and one in Phoenix.

Thanks everyone. It is hard on us, but it seems really hard on momma. I got home from work 45 min. ago and she hasn't stopped crying at me. It's very sad, because you know she's hurting.

I'm so sorry, GTO. I can't even imagine what you and your wife are going through right now. And poor momma dog!! She must be going out of her mind with grief!!
Sorry to hear of your loss ltlgto. I can only imagine how hard it must be for someone who puts as much into their dogs as you do. What makes it worse is that you don't really know what went wrong. It's like there is no closure and nothing to try and prevent from happening on the next litters.
Very sad indeed. I'm glad the momma dog has such great owners.
Thanks again for the continued warm replys. Your right Ansy, we don't know what went wrong, so don't know where we stand with another litter. The vets really had no medical reasons they could give us. We'll have to decide what to do with the momma, but we probably won't breed her again.
On a lighter note, Kisses, our brown standard goes in for OFA next month to have her hips checked and Lily goes in to be spayed the same day. Lily gave us wonderful puppies and it's time for her to retire from being a mother and just be a regal girl! We are now trying to decide whether or not to keep one of her girls. She will probably be placed in a wonderful home. That part is hard also as breeders, but it is part of it. She hasn't been over bred, will be around 5 years old, and still have plenty of life left for someone to enjoy and give her all the attention and joy she deserves. We already have 3 families/people that want her.

I'm so sorry about the loss of the puppies. Luckily, the mom dog has wonderful owners who will make this terrible time for her go as smoothly as possible. I just wish there were something we could do for you.

As far as retiring my dogs go, I do the same as you. I want them young enough to enjoy the rest of their life, with people that I have picked to exactly fit what the dog enjoys most in life...My bloodline continues with their offspring. Kitty's mom was my favorite dog, but Kitty has more than made up for the loss of her mom, combining the supernatural intelligence of my lines bred to a line that conferred the best personality I have ever seen in a dog. With lives as short as theirs, they truely live twice when rehomed properly...
Awe, GTO, ((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))to both you and your wife. That is just the sadest thing to go thru. most breeders eventually loose a puppy or two, even when you do everything right. God has different ideas at times. You will have learned something from this I am sure. I know how hard it is for you to have to look into the toy mommy's eyes. She is in such pain loosing her beautiful babies. I'm very sad for you and her. Me loving poodles, I could not stand to go thru what you are going thru. It would just break my heart in two.
Remember the gals on the poodle forum. There is always someone wanting to adopt a poo here and there. Buster come to mind. She has been looking for a spoo for a while now, she's in California. She does not even have a poo, but has been a member for a good while now.
I know this was posted a while ago but I've been slacking in my forum reading--I am so so so so so sorry to hear about your loss. There is nothing worse than something going wrong and having no idea why. It is so hard. I feel for you and your family, including momma. :(
The placentas were intact in the 1st litter? Was the stud dog the same? Was the litter larger the 1st time? Where I'm going with this is that I have had back to back losses on 2 litters that were different in some ways to my others....I may have some input on this relevant to my recent experience, as your vet said, it is mostly conjecture, not fact, but doesn't hurt to roll it around a bit, mentally, for the sake of future success.
Sorry for the late reply...I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your pups! That has to be horribly hard..I can't imagine. Is mom eating any better? Hopefully you'll get frequent updates on the other two pups in their happy homes.....
