At one time that is exactly what I thought-- I thought why on earth would anybody breed with so many dogs needing homes??!! But lots of reading and learning later, I know that if we did not have breeders out there breeding for correct temperament, breed standard, ability, and health, we would not be able to get a yorkie and expect it to act like a yorkie... All dogs would become mixed, eventually so mixed that we couldn't narrow it down to a mix of 2 breeds... so that we could not pick a breed that's right for us based on the general size, coat length, and temperament of that breed. Not to mention those who use them for work, like hunting dogs.
Well, if you do breed, have real good reasons for it. I wish the Labrador Retriever club's "Breeder's Code of Ethics" wasn't so durn long... I would post it here. It is 3 pages of rules to adhere to when breeding.... Oh, if anyone has not read Sam's story, above, I do apologise...I cried twice while posting it. The 1st time I read it I was traumatized for a week or so... I cry every time that I read it or send it to a friend, or a person considering spending large amounts of money on a geriatric dog[face it, they croak at a certain age, save a young healthy dog and get on with life], or a person wanting one of my pups for starting their own little dog factory. I give them the story instead of selling them a puppy. It is the worst thing about having a litter, screening the buyers. The world is full of skanks and shysters. I am sick to death of talking to lying, connieving, ignorant, people that want a pup for the wrong reasons. It sure is hard to separate the good from the bad, even with my 20+ years of experience. I would say, Oasis, the world would be better if LESS people breed, and if MORE people breed ethically...
I have read that story about Sam many times, and I cry each time I read it too. I also have a couple more I like to share with people, just for the sake of sharing: http://www.ildoberescue.com/photosandtributes.htm I guess you can only get to How Could You. You can google I Stole Your Dog Today, and read it from there. Very enlightening?? Sad, definitely sad.
Kittys Mom, I have seen that story before and like you I cry each & every time I read it. It is a very moving story and I personally think for every person who is looking to bring a furpal into their family it should be required reading. I know it wouldn't reach everyone and change everyone's personal outlook but if it will open just a few pairs of eyes that would be a good start. I also believe breeding should be done only by those who are looking to better a breed.
Oasis, I believe your heart is in the right place and you do want to better the breed and along with that you are hoping to possibly be able to make a little money and give your children the experience as well as educate them on proper pet care and responsibility.
