New Member Saying Hello

Hi all, I've just joined your group. I recognize a few names from another forum, but I look forward to getting to know you all....and of course, your 4-legged family members.

I live in Kansas and am rep for a national chinese crested rescue organization. I currently live with 4 CCs, three puffs and one very hairy hairless (see avatar). We are owned by 3 CCs, Pixie (3.5 yrs), Bandit (3 yrs on 07/01), and our newest addition, Lil Ricky (actual age unknown but approx 15 mo.). Copper is my current foster dog who will be leaving us this coming Wednesday for his new home in Bremerton, WA. While I'm so excited for him, we will miss his sweet face & even sweeter disposition immensely. But, there is another Crestie in need waiting in the wings for me and I hope to go get him next weekend. He is a 12 week old puff named Ninja and by all accounts he's a little terror. That's okay, I love `em feisty & ornery. We'll just have to remember to keep our shoes out of harms way as he reportedly has a real shoe fetish. LOL

Our newest kid, Lil Ricky, is a former puppymill dog. He's been with us for just over 12 weeks. I knew within minutes after getting him home that there was something just not right about him (puppymill issues aside) and I believed it was his vision. After having him checked by an ophthalmalogist we learned he is indeed vision impaired (basically has "tunnel vision" for lack of a better term). No early signs of PRA, glaucoma, cataracts, or other retinal problems but he will have to be tested yearly for the next 5-6 yrs. At this point we have no idea if his vision will deteriorate over time, but I am preparing myself in the event that should happen. He also has some orthopedic & neurological deficits, but all considered, he's doing fabulous. When he first came to me, he couldn't even walk on our hardwood floors...his little legs would just slip right out from under him; he'd never walked on anything other than a wire cage floor so grass, wood deck, concrete, everything was all new & terribly scary for him. Copper has been a fabulous asset for helping Ricky overcome so many of his fears (yet another reason we are really sad to see Copper go and it hurts my heart so to think of Ricky wandering around the house looking for his best pal, Copper). Ricky's favorite pasttimes now are laying out in the sun on our deck, running full speed ahead outside, and playing tug of war. He obviously never knew human love before coming into rescue, but he knows it now and he's turned into the sweetest little cuddlebug. When we learned of all his health problems, we just couldn't bear the thought of adopting him out so we adopted him and we are so glad we did. He's a joy to have in our home.

Someone recently said to me that doing rescue/fostering is the sweetest heartache you'll ever know....and it is so true. I get so attached to all my fosters and if I didn't have a husband I'd probably have a lot more than 4 dogs. I just have to keep telling myself that if I don't move Copper on, then I don't have a spot for the next one (like Ninja) that needs me.

I could never do fostering. I'd end up keeping them all. Plus I think hubby would kill me. 5 dogs is enough in this house. He's always complaing about them but he'd never give any of them up. Someone offerend to take Kylse(my Boxer who's a rescue) and he was like "He** No" yet he's always complaing about how her a Storm (My American Bulldog) don't get along, and he has to do the doggie shuffle.

Anyways,  I have 5 dogs as I already said, Winter a Corgie\Eskimo mix she's a rescue, Kylse a Boxer also a resuce, Barney I call him my Ghetto mutt he was found wondering the street, Tigger who I call my Pound Mutt, and Lastly Storm my American Bulldog the only one that I bought from a breeder.

So you can say you are in rescue too....you just failed fostering 101. My hubby complains all the time too. My only female, Pixie, is not too fond of her daddy...and she never lets him forget it. He keeps telling me that he's going to put Pixie in the crate and send her to WA instead of Copper, but of course, he's said that when all the fosters have moved on. He knows if he wants an immediate castration & then divorce, he'll leave my Pixie-Pie alone.

I think CC's are the cutest!  I have always heard that they have super comedic personalities!  Looking forward to hearing more about them.

I have 2 standard poodles, Farley who is 6 & Chloe who is 4 and they are the joys of my life!

Hats off to you for the rescue work you do!

Welcome, Crestie!! I recognize you from another forum as well, although I don't believe I was still a member there when you came about. Sounds like you've got a handful of cuddly lil poochies!! I'm about to try and do rescue myself, if my hubby agrees to it. Doberman rescue, with Doberman Rescue of Nebraska. I'm in Iowa. Glad to see you hear and I look forward to reading more of your posts about your brood!!

Hi Crestie!  I got to play with my first Crestie last year.  I had seen them before but I had never gotten close to play with one.  It amazed me how hot their skin is.  I also could not get over the constant shaking.  That made me a nervous wreck.  However I did fall in love with the personality.  How adorable!

I currently have 6 dogs, all rescue.  I have a pomeranian, cocker spaniel, cavalier king charles spaniel, black lab/german shepard, a beagle (maybe all beagle, although she is just so small), and a choc. lab/doberman mix.

Well hello there. I seem to remember another crestie owner here, I beleive.  I think cresties are pretty cool looking dogs. They arre one breed that has caught my eye. I love the one in your avatar. If I had one it would have to be with the two tone skin and hair in particular places. Like that one.  Do you shave parts of the body of unwanted hair that pops up. The face too?

That is an understatement, Denise. They are total clowns. If you want to watch a few hysterical mini-videos, click out here:
http://the_yorks.home.mindspring.com/Pixie%20&%20Bandit/Copper/
then click on the file called "singing cresties." WARNING: if your dogs are within earshot it could set off a riot. LOL There are several other videos out there as well as a buttload of pics. Feel free to look at any and all at your leisure (to view them all, click on the "parent directory.". I love sharing pics of my kids. I think we even have one out there of the dogs chasing this little remote control car...it's a hoot.

My best friend does Dobe rescue here in Missouri. She generally just takes the senior dogs and gives them a place to live out the rest of their years. She gets younger dogs occasionally and does place them, but for the most part she sticks to the senior dogs. Dobes are such wonderful dogs. My brother had one when we were kids and she was the sweetest, goofy girl. She was the first dog I ever saw throw a frisbee to herself.

Yes, I do choose to shave him down. Ricky is what they call a very hairy hairless. He has little to no hair on his neck, his tummy, the insides of his legs and he has the cutest little bald butt cheeks. Ricky also has a poor quality coat, it's only a single and the texture is terrier like, not soft & silky like most. So, for those reasons and the mere fact that I just LOVE all his spots, I keep him shaved like a hairless. All my kids get their faces shaved every other week (and the two with long coats get their butts shaved to avoid dingleberries) and the boys get part of their tummy shaved as well. My female has a very curly, cottony coat that matts with the blink of an eye, so in the summer months I keep her in a hairless cut as well. When ear fringe gets too long and the ears start to drop, I will shave them as well.

Of all the resuces I've had, there's only been one hairless (and he was a nekkid as they come...if you go look at the pics posted in the link above, you'll see him)...we call our home The House of Puffs..

I saw a very naked dog on the sining video.  How did you get them to do that.  was there a fire engine coming by or something like that.  he looks like a little reindeer.

Hah...I don't have to do a darn thing. I get treated to that at least once a day. I've really got to get a new one made because Lil Ricky sounds like someone is sitting on him. Cresties are just singers. It usually starts with my white/chocolat puff, Bandit, barking and then the others just join in. I've tell people it's because Bandit has such a high-ptiched bark that it hurts the others ears so they have to sing to drown out his barking.
