Kula doesn't dig very often, or very deep, but we just put the fence up last weekend, so he has lots more freedom and time in the yard on his own.
When he digs (and I don't catch him in the act), I fill in the hole with dog poop and he never goes back to that spot. If I do catch him, he gets disciplined. My question is...how do I get him to stop altogether? I don't want my backyard to consist of shallow holes filled with dog poop by the end of the summer!!
I have a neighbor with the same problem......lol She has tried the poo and a big rock and even a mouse trap in the hole and nothing worked. We made a digging pit in the corner of our yard that's kinda big and showed them that it's ok to dig there and scold them when they dig in the yard. We showed them by grabbing their feet and digging with them.......lol We never have a problem with digging. Might help........don't know.
I agree with Oasis about having a spot where it's okay for the dog to dig, a digging pit or something. I have heard that chicken wire or similar wire mesh fixed to the ground with rebarb will do the trick while still allowing the grass to grow.
Dog are den building animals. The instinct is real strong in Labs. If the dog has something like peanut butter/cheese kongs, or a crazy ball w/ cookies, or other distractions, they get sidetracked...I just live with it. Maybe use less of the yard for the dog's run?
I have the same problem Moen..My schnauzers have dug to china and have made a mess out of my yard just by the deck stairs. I just had the sand and topsooil lanscaped last summer and have no grass as of yet top speak of. I cant get them to stop...I catch them and make them stoop only to have them do it the next time they go out to pee...They are not out long and are busy little bees when they are out. I think im going to have to put patio stones where they have done it now...any tips I would appreciate...Thanks
