Need advice on this one too....

Kula does a great job going out with me to the front yard to get the mail, get the paper, whatever, as long as there are no people around.  He'll run around in the yard, and maybe go to the sidewalk, but he always comes when he's called and stays fairly close.

BUT, if there are ANY other people out, he TAKES OFF and will not stop if I call him.  (He wants to meet everyone). He goes right into the street, so I'm terrified that he's going to get hit by a car.

Am I going to have to have him on the leash in the front yard forever?

I think I would have to put him on a leash. If he gets hit by a car you would feel so guilty for not having him on one. So I say better safe than sorry. I never let Oscar in the front yard without a leash for that exact reason.

Just a suggestion but try putting him on a leash and when you go outside and he sees people, if he starts to go up to them, jerk back and say "leave it" or "wait".  Eventually he should understand that he says until you say it's ok.

I guess I'm going to just have to keep him on the leash, and devote some more time to training on this specifically.  You're exactly right....I would be devastated if he was hurt because I didn't have him on the leash.  We'll see how it goes with some more training..

Thanks, guys!
