It really makes me mad. My mom called me Saturday while I was at my b/fs house and my neighbors dog was killed by a truck Saturday. That is the 5th dog I've known in the past 6 years die from careless owners. My friend's mini schnauzer died in '99, and her golden in '04 because they were allowed to run loose. Plus, 3 other dogs in this neighborhood in the past couple of years. The dog is the victim, but if they were so careless, they were asking for it. Mine are never allowed to run because they are dummies and would dance around in the road. ha
Yeah I know what you mean with loose dogs. But my mother had a Boxer that was allowed to be loose when she was outside and he was so good about staying right by your side. But one day something just caught his eye and he darted out across the highway and got ran over. It was awful. I don't think i have ever ran that fast before. I remember picking him up and runing about 100 yards to the house with him. He died before we got him to the vet.
That is so sad I hope those stupid, neglectful owners will sometime grow a brain, so they realize that this is not the proper way to care for a dog. I used to have a rat terrier when I was growing up and we let him outside loose, to go potty. He'd always come back after an hour or so. He ruled the neighborhood dogs. But I realize that this was the wrong way to care for him. He never went out into the street when there was a car, thank God. But I realize that what we did was wrong, but I was like 6 when we got him. So I didn't know any better. He was the best dog I've ever had. His name was Hank.
One of the problems is that dogs are not too cooperative, about staying in the yard. They can be darn devious, and usually are escaping when the owner is at work or in bed. They can dig, squeeze, or climb out of yards. I had one pair 20 years ago, where the bitch, chained in the yard, snapped a steel choke collar, and dug out of the yard, taking the dog in tow along with her. I got a call at 7am, by an irate good citizen that found them entering a freeway on-ramp, one city away. I was in bed... I have for generations since kept dogs locked inside the house in cages, and tightly supervised when outside. Once, a year ago, during a rainstorm at midnight, 3 dogs popped open the locked chain link gate, by hitting it with their combined weight[or were let out by large strong teen pranksters]. Were it not for the fact that they are continously monitored 24/7, that would have been fatal for them. I got them back w/in the 1st 15min. that they were gone. I am the most phobic and clingy dog owner you will ever meet, and yet, it still can happen. Of course, there are also bad dog owners, but do not assume, even if it is from the goodness of your heart. Nothing would have been worse if either incident had resulted in the death of loved and extremely valuable pets, and then someone came along and said it was my fault. I thank my guardian angels, and all good sams...
Yes, but it is the responsibility of the owners, should anything happen, like the dog getting hit by a car, or biting a passerby, or anything like that. So I would think they'd want to take every precaution so as not to have anything like that happen. JMO. I would NEVER let either of my dogs run loose. I can't trust them, especially Mollie.
I'm not sure if I trust Oscar in the front yard loose with me. I know sometimes I let him loose at the park and he doesn't get more than 15 feet away from me. But really thats something I don't want to test out. If he ran off I think I would have a heart attack.
