Made the dog food yummier

I was cleaning out the fridge yesterday and I made the dogs very happy. There was a half pound of uncooked ground beef that was 3 days old. I am pretty funny about eating any meat after 3 days, but it looked fine and didn't smell. So I boiled it in a big pot and saved the broth. I put the broth in the fridge for a bit and then skimmed the fat off (made beef stock). The dogs were thrilled to death to get some ground beef with their food and then the whole thing covered in beef broth! I also gave them some eggs (with their breakfast meal) and I dried out the shells at a low temp in the oven and made powder from them to put over their food. It is a free and effective way to give some extra calcium.

I usually do one real food meal a week. I do a meat like chicken or beef or canned salmon or tuna fish. I f I have no meat I substitue eggs.  2 veggies, like carrots, broccoli, spinach, english peas, green beans, or squash, and rice. Then I mush it all up and add hot water, so that it is the consistency of warm puke. I did this for about 2 months straight with Missy, and I didn't cook any of the food, just blended it all up together. I added enzymes and kelp and alfalfa and the egg powder. Now I boil the meat and only do it once a week. Though today and tomorrow they will be getting ground beef and broth in addition to their kibble just because I have it.

My husband would laugh if he heard anyone call me Susie Homemaker, I am completely not domestic. I can cook almost nothing, luckily hubby is a great cook.

I too had some old meat in the fridge. I had put chicken in there to thaw about 4 days ago so I just fed it to Oscar this morning. Anytime he gets raw chicken he goes absolutely nuts for it.

Yah. Yesterday they got leftover roast beef, hamburger, chicken, and cheese with their kibble. Some pretty happy campers they were.

A lot of times, human food is too rich for them.
I have a low grease, whole grain kinda thing going on here, so it usually works out.
I feel guilty if I give them white[sourdough] bread leftovers.

I never thought about doing that with the egg shells.  Do you just bake them and then kind of grind them up?

Yes, you dry them out in the oven at a low temp(150 or 200) for a few hours and then put them in the coffe grinder. They turn to a fine powder immediately.
