Piper got neutered today! BIG moment for us.....

We had planned on getting Piper neutered in the first week of April, but we felt he just wasn't ready emotionally......so we put it off until we could work with him more.

Today, after 6 long months.......he walked into the vets office on a leash!!  He was shaking and panting but he did it.  We were so proud of him.  Thats the first time he has left our place since we have had him.  I simply could not have asked for a better acting dog.  It's like we finally 'broke through'.......and he trusted us.

We dropped him off at 8AM and when we went back to get him, there was another lady in the waiting area.  When I walked out with Piper she immediately said (in the rudest voice) "What is that lab mixed with?"  I said that I didn't think he was mixed with anything but that I wasn't sure because there were no papers on him.  She replies "Well, I can tell you right now that he is mixed with something because I have a chocolate lab and he doesn't look anything like your dog.  Your dog is mixed!"  I said  (as rude as I could) "I really don't care what he is.  He's a rescue and if I would have wanted a pedigree'd dog, I would have bought one.  Instead, I chose to save this ones life".  She then says "Well, he is still a mix!".

I guess she woke up on the wrong side of the bed or something.  I have never seen someone act like that.  Who cares what anyone else's dog is?  Mixed or purebred.......why let it bother you to the point of being rude?  it was just so odd that she went off like that.....lol and I had never even said anything to her!  People really amaze me sometimes.  She then proceeds to ask the vet tech what she can do for her cat who obsessively licks herself.  The vet tech told her to see a behavioralist.  She said "why would my cat need to see a behavioralist?"......and I said "because he lives with you"....then walked out.....lol

Anyway, Piper walked right up into the car....didn't even have to pick him up.  He is resting comfortably in the living room now.  I couldn't have been more proud of him today.  As scared as he was, he still walked like a gentleman on that leash.  I was so worried all day that he was thinking that we had just dropped him off somewhere because we didn't want him.  I couldn't wait to get back and give him a hug.  When I take him out to potty on the leash, he just does so well.  He doesn't even tug on it.  He waits for my lead.

I just wanted to share the news with those of you who have been around since we first got him and know his story.  Today was the biggest milestone we have gotten to, and I couldn't be happier!

Next stop......the lake!

BTW, little mister Ivan The Terrible seen the snippers as well.....lol.  Maybe he wont be so terrible anymore...lol

Wasn't it Piper who was so afraid when you first rescued him and you couldn't get him to go through a door to come inside the out of the cold? And your Husband about killed himself carrying Piper in so he wouldn't freeze to death? And it took everything just to get him to let you touch him? You didn't even know if you could bring him out of his shell because he was so neglected. Well, If I'm thinking of the same Piper, that's really terrific.

Sometimes I get people and their pets confused.

Good for him, no running and jumping till those stitches come out.

That women was very rude. I love being in the waiting room, I ask nicely if a dog is mixed then ask them to let me guess, sort of like a guessing game.

There was a lady staring at me the last time, I finally said (trying not to be rude) Do I know you, because you keep looking at me. I felt like she was staring a whole right thru me. She just said, in a startled voice oh no. I wish I knew what she was staring at. was starting to think maybe my lipstick was on crooked or something

Sounds like Piper has come thru everything with great strides. My poodle Sasha had a bumpy road too. She would become a little bump on the sidewalk when I first started walking her. Fearful of any noise.

You have done a great job with Piper

PitPat, you are correct!  That is the same dog.  I'm shocked and touched that you remembered all of that!

YAY for Piper!!!!  I'm happy he made such a change in the past months.

And don't worry about the ladies coments. She is nothing but a rude butt. And I have seen tons of labs and they are all built differently.

I remember you telling about Piper and when you got him and another dog, I believe, on that other forum. You were going through the same thing I went through with my chow chow I rescued. She didn't make it, unfortunately. I kept thinking about him and wondering if you were able to break through with him. I really wanted him to be a success story.

Also, I thought is was neat how patient you Husband was with him. I mean, he went out in the freezing rain to carry Piper in the house so he wouldn't freeze to death because he was afraid to walk on the leash and he was afraid to go through a door.

That make me happy to hear that Piper is doing so good.

That is because he looks like a real Labrador, and she own's a squatty, pig shaped freak that has all it's angles in place, yet breathes like a locomotive when walking, and doubtless will die if retrieving a duck into a boat.
That all aside, I am glad you did not take her crap. People like that are ruining the breed. It is all that I can do to straddle the fence that I am given between show and working dogs. Your dog is lovely. Oh, and real Labs are quite brave, so he is doing well, congrats...
By the way, a lot of the finer retrievers in the world are homely as heck. Yours is quite Labradoric, but the opinions on how a Lab should look are varied. That lady was nasty. I hope I don't meet anyone like her in my current mood...

Well, we have no idea if Piper is a pure bred or not, but one thing is for sure......I can always look to you, KM, for a good late night giggle!  I always love reading your posts and antics....lol

Ansy, that is wonderful news about Piper!  You & your husband are to be commended for the dedication, love & patience you have given him helping him overcome his insecurities.  You may also find now that you have brought him somewhere, left him for a while & then he returned to you that he may start making greater strides.  You have given him the assurance that he will be with you no matter what.  Keep up the great work with him!

Piper has come a long way! You should give yourself and your family a pat on the back. A lot of people would not have the patience. As far as the rude lady in the vet shop, she sounds familiar......lol

"She said "why would my cat need to see a behavioralist?"......and I said "because he lives with you"....then walked out.....lol"

Good for you, Ansy!

I've met more than my share of people like that.....I used to work with retarded children and one day I took one of my students to McDonalds on my day off. A woman I can only assume is in some way related to your "he's mixed with something" woman, commented loudly on the fact that this kid drooled. I told her, "You're gonna drool too, once I knock your teeth out." (And no, I did not actually knock out her teeth.)

Piper is lucky to have people like you and your husband. I am so glad he's doing well. (Willow Ermengarde was spayed Friday, so they'll be recovering at the same time!) There's something so special about the love you get from an animal you've saved......the only thing that compares is having a child.
