AWWW, the power of prayer and positive energy!!! I'm so glad Holly is doing better. We will all continue to do so to assure Holly has many more days to spend with her family.
Well-Holly truely earns the name the comeback kid forsure now! She has fought her disease off once again like a little trooper! She and I laid on the couch and I cried and cried and told her not to go! And she is 100% back to mischievious spoiled little Holly once again! Giving her sisters a hard time, and following me like my shadow! After many hours of tears and recoupe time, and then a family trip to her favorite beach, she is as good as new! I cant take these scares anymore, and I cant take watching her suffer when she is sick! I think I will just have to chance her surgery and try and live with the consequences if they are not good. I know if i dont try it- and she dosnt pull through, I will feel more at peace then If I dont at least try it! Other wise this will just turn into a vicious cycle Im afraid. I dont know how many more of them Holly, my kids, or Myself can take! I wasnt the only one who was in doubt Holly would come out of it this time! My 10 year old son asked me if I would need him to dig a grave for Holly, after hearing my call to the Emergency Vet! Its heart wrenching for all involved! My daughter asked me to stop crying because it makes her cry...its just hard, but a happy ending Thanks to everyone out there and also to the big guy up there too!
I have to share this quote I found when I checked my Email-it reminded me of Holly!
"What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog!"
I'm so glad that Holly is doing so much better. The antibiotics and flushing the bacteria out of the intestine. Just make sure you give her the added dietary fiber and add some extra zinc to her diet.
If you do decide to do the surgery, so some research, and maybe get some other opinions from more than one Vet. Maybe consult with a holistic vet if you have one by you. You know the old saying, "two heads are better than one."
I believe that Holly has a lot of spunk and spirit. She's young and relatively healthy other than the shunt. I think she has a really good chance. Best of luck to Holly, you, and your family. Like you said, things like this affect everyone.
PitPatAZ_ Added dietary fiber and zinc? I have 2 vets currently for Holly and either one has mentioned that but if it could help PLEASE tell me how I could give her that? Are you a vet? Or do you work at a vets office? I have only heard to give Holly her K/d, K/d treats and her liqued forms of Biosal and Lactulose. Please elaberate if you have anymore other advise PitPat!!! I would REALLY appreciate it!
I was a vet tech in 1990 to '93. I've always been interested in holistic remedies as an alternative.
Since the liver cleans the blood and stores important vitamins, the shunt is preventing this. The zinc will aid in the detoxification of ammonia in the blood. Liver also stores vitamins B,C,D,E,and K. Holly's liver isn't able to do this. So make sure her diet consist of these. The worse thing is the build-up of toxins in the blood. So the important things are:
Soluable fiber (lactulose) absorb neurotoxins
Insoluable fiber (bran) to make elimination easier
Zinc- detoxification of ammonia
Antibiotics- infections
When consulting with your Vet(s), asked them first what they think. I really suggest a second opinion before you make your decision.
Hey PitPat- Im sorry to bug you again-but how would I go about giving Holly the extra Zinc and Fiber? You don't think the K/D is enough to sustain her? Plus her Biosal and Lactulose? Is there anything else I could give my little girl to help her with this shunt?
Mix a tablespoon of wheat germ (insoluable fiber) in with her food. You can get this at any health food store or grocery store in the cereal isle. The zinc you can get in the vitamin section at most stores. I think it comes in tablet form. Just grind up half of one in her food since she probably is already getting it in her food.
Thanks! I will try that! I wonder why the dogfood co. dosnt add these things to the prescription food already! I for one would pay for it if it where included and helpful !!! Thanks again! I dont know what I would do without any of you guys!
