kiddie pools & dogs

Since the weather is warming up Im gonna go out today and buy my girls one of those plastic kiddie pools at ToysRUs. I would really like to buy a large blow up one since they are bigger and the girls can all get in it but im worried they might pop it or something.

Anyone here have a pool for your dog?If so what kind?

RE: kiddie pools & dogs

Yeah, i just have the Walmart 4.00 plastic one and they love it.  They usually just dip their feet in.  Yeah a blow up one might pop but i don't know.  Walmart has the big plastic ones that i bet they would fit in.  Good luck.

O...how often do you empty the pool? It use to take me a while just to fill it so i never liked dumping it right away unless it got icky. But then i worry about mosquitos.

rule of thumb is, misquitos like the water when it starts to ferment (smell and get mossy) but i usually dump it once a week.  If it starts looking nasty or gets full of bugs, i dump it sooner but now i have started covering it with a tarp at night and uncover it during the day and it seems to last longer and has less dead bugs in it.

When it is really hot out...don't forget the ice cubes!! Molly loves playing with them and chewing them.

Last year I got mine a blow up one for like $2 at Wal Mart. They never popped it. That was when we had Eli, our doberman, and he was the one that used it the most and nothing ever happened. The only thing with the inflatable ones is that you'd want to prolly throw it away in the fall, because who wants to touch it with their mouth once it's had mud and yuck in it?? Not me!! This year though, I think I'll get them a plastic one. That way we don't have to buy one every year. Good thinkin with the tarp, BTW, O!!

Oscar won't even get his feet wet. He is such a wimp when it comes to water. But he never stays outside long enough to get hot.

yeah, Paige, I can relate, Rocky is a huge water chicken. We through him in ours a couple times last year and he can swim, but he won't go near the pool!! lol  Molly is a sea otter! I love watching her swim, it is so cute. She will swim to a raft and get on it in the water!!

She never popped anything last year, it was a blow up pool. This year is the normal above ground 18 ft. pool....she can't just jump in like last year.  She scared me with jumping in.....what if she couldn't get out for some reason and I didn't know she was in there!! That would have been horrible. At least I don't have to watch her as closely this year...the deck will have a gate on it....for normal people to baby or child proof it....in my case to puppy proof it!!!

The little plastic baby pool makes a great watering dish for Rocky(lol), Molly loves to play in it though. Jump in and out....and again, she loves the ice cubes.

It is not quite hot enough here to fill mine.
I bought a real sturdy one years ago, it is very heavy plastic and holds a lot of water.
I am afraid of mosquitos, too. We have West Nile Virus in this area. I believe that I had it last year[had a fever that lasted a week, no other symptoms, REAL high fever]. But still don't want skeeters around the dogs, etc.
If you put the pool in shade, the algae does not grow in it, whereas, in sun, it mosses up in about 2 days.

I got my pups the one with the liner bottom and the plastic sides.  It's easier to change the  water.   I change it every few days, at least twice a week, due to mesquitos.  There is a real problem with West Nile here.

You can run an aquarium pump in it when the dogs are not playing in it so that there's air circulating in the water and no mosquitoes!
