MPP, I'm probably the same age or close to the same as your Dad. I use to be a boozer, smoker, junk food junkies for most of my life. Now it's no booze, cigs, junk food (I'm a vegetarian.) I feel better now and I'm healthier than I've ever been. It's just a way of life I decided to choose for myself, not for anyone else.
Without actually preaching(preaching gets you nowhere,) get your Dad some literature on a healthier lifestyle and maybe he was freaked out enough to want to change his. Meat is one of the main things that can clog arteries to the heart, (along with other body parts.)
Once I gave up all the "bad" stuff I had a feeling of being liberated. It feels really good. Not that I don't crave a smoke, a shot of vodka, or a juicy steak from time to time. I just thumb my nose at the craving and it usually passes about 30 seconds later.
I said a prayer for you today And know God must have heard. I felt the answer in my heart Although He spoke no word! I didn't ask for wealth of fame (I knew you wouldn't mind). I asked Him to send treasures Of a far more lasting kind! I asked that He'd be near you At the start of each new day; To grant your health and blessings And friends to share your way! I asked for happiness for you In all things great and small. But it was for His loving care I prayed the most of all!

M.p.p how is your father today? He sounds like such a great person. He will be fine, I believe. My landlord had a heart attack about 5 years ago. He is sooo greatful to be alive, plunged even deeper into family activity. What a great grandpa he is too. You are lucky to have him. Make sure he stops the smoking my L.L. had to stop too.
