Puppy help

Hello all, I am new here and am currently in need of puppy help.  my husband and I recently got a siberian husky pup, she turned 6 weeks old Friday, June 3.  We've been having a little trouble keeping her from crying like mad at night.  I spent the first week with my hand in the kennel at night to keep her quiet.  We live in an apartment so I can't quite just let her cry, too small an area and I suspect the neighbors would complain.  She seems to prefer sleeping in the bathroom (because it's cooler leaning on the toilet) but we've GOT to get her used to the kennel.  We've tried the warm water bottle, cold ice packs.  Its getting a little better, at least I can sleep most of the night on the bed as opposed to on the floor.  But it's really starting to wear me down and I worry that since we have a long distance move coming up her howling while she's kenneled in the car.

Any Ideas?

O.K. I am sure none of this is going to help, but thought I would tell you how bad I am...lol

When I first got my dog, he cried in the crate, so I let him sleep with me and there was no more crying and no more waking up at night to go potty...he slept all night...lol

Then shortly thereafter I got another puppy...well... she was as well behaved! She would jump down in the middle of the night... so I had to start putting them in their crates. They would cry and cry. Finally I put them together in one crate. No more problems. They never cry...now if I separate them, they will.

I know...I 'm not very good.. They are spoiled

However, here is an interesting link I found about it..maybe it will help!! lol

Thanks, I'll have to see if she does it.  I would put her in the bed with us but dont want to have to worry about her "messing" the bed.  She and Lola get along all right, (could be better) but I wouldn't quite trust sticking them in the same kennel all night together.  Lola might get a little too annoyed at being kenneled, Lola hasn't been kenneled in a couple of months.

Have you tried a ticking clock? Sometimes that helps. Seems she is so young and should still be with her mother, that may have alot to do with her problems. Puppies usually and should stay with their mother til the age of 8 weeks. Seems she just turned 6 weeks i'm guess that she was much younger when you got her. Takeing a pup away from it's mother too young can cause alot of behavioral issues later in life. Placeing a ticking alarm clock sometimes helps cause the pup at that point she thinks that their mother is still there. Or you could always try turning on a raido really low next to her crate. Try keeping her in the same room as you. If she gets hot buy her, her own personal fan.

Exorcist- I have a new puppy too, and for the first week he cried all night in his crate. I couldn't take it anymore and asked my Mom to watch him so I could have one solid night of sleep. Well Grandma let the little guy sleep on her bed. The next morning she called me and asked if I was crazy because Chason had slept 9hrs, and SHE had to wake him up. So from that nite on, it has been fine. He sleeps on his own little blanket at the foot of the bed. One time in the middle of the nite he had to go potty and he got up, and came and licked my face to wake me up. Not a mess on the bed yet. It's been pure heaven, and I do put him in his crate when he's in the car with us, and he doesn't cry as long as he can see us. I know this isn't the answer you were looking for...but just thought I'd share my experience with you.

I hesitate in putting her in the bed, because she will eventually be a BIG dog.  Where as it doesn't bother my husband, I see fighting with the dogs for bed space in the future  Maybe won't be so bad, but when I see the kids we'll eventually have makes for a VERY full bed!

They stop crying when they get older. Most pups have separation anxiety from the litter. That, and they are small, confused, and in unfamiliar settings.
ROUTINE is real big. If the pup knows when to expect what, it helps.
Also, feed the pup before the times you want quiet, then allow time for poop[feeding outside where pooping is to occur it best] playing, then crate for bedtime after all that. When the meals are timed to your bedtime and your work-time, they sleep in the appropriate intervals. Nothing says nap like a full belly. As a pup that age should have 3 evenly divided meals a day, or at least two, you have an opportunity to establish your down-time.
Word of caution, Husky type dogs can be very vocal anyway.

Oh, and I have NEVER had a dog on my bed or furniture. All my dogs are house dogs. Pups should have squueeky toys, and toys with bells, durability varies according to age.

Now its my turn. LOL!!! When we brought Oscar home he slept in bed with us from day one. And he never had an accident in the bed either. Plus he slept all night long. Now he still sleeps with us only when we let him. He is good about going to sleep in the living room. Plus he weighs 160 pounds.

I wish I was working right now so there could be a schedule.  The only set schedule we have is that my hubby has physical training in the morning, comes home relaxes sometimes takes a nap and then leaves for his class around 2:30ish and isn't home till 11 or so.  Bedtime is anywhere from midnight to 1 am.  Like I said I wish I was working so we could have a schedule.  One car right now, so when we finally get somewhere a little more "permanent" we'll get a second car for him to drive. Then I can work and go back to school.

She was 5 weeks and a couple of days when we got her (technically 5 1/2 weeks)  we've had her exactly one week.

congrats on your new pup ! we never went through the whining part of puppyhood. our pups were both two and a half months old when we got them. i am surprised that they let the pups go at only six weeks.they are still missing mama at that age. i never crated mine at all. they both flew in in them. rocky from missouri, and annie from russia.i got them a doggie bed and put it next to the bed. they use it for naps, but sleep in our bed at night.maybe the pup is just protesting the crate itself. try putting a doggie bed next to yours and keep her confined to your room .or even a playpen. let her be near you where she doesnt feel alone. she will calm down. i see you have a frenchie !  they are the best !  i have two. rocky and annie. they are spoiled little babies .lol

Somebody might have already said this, but have you heard of a snuggle puppy? It has a heartbeat and heating pad.

Thank you oasis for fixing my links for me.  I wasn't sure how to do it when I posted it.  Thank you everyone for the ideas.  I put a cold ice block (the kind from wal-mart) wrapped in a towel in the kennel with Tiki last night.  She slept (or at least was quiet) from 11ish last night until 5:30 this morning when I had to transfer her to the bathroom so she could use her potty pad.  All was quiet again until the hubby got up for PT.   Then about 8 she started crying.  I'm up for the day now and so are the pups

Again, Thank you so much for the responses and Ideas.  I knew if I posted other places I'd get bashed for getting my pup so young.  Thank you to everyone for not doing so!

Trust me, your pup will grow up just fine. I got Oscar when he was 5 weeks old too and that was because his mother had 9 pups and it was her fist litter. And she had totally started ignoring the pups and not acting motherly at all. Actually I think she was completly annoyed with them. And everyone thought she might actually hurt the pups. But Oscar turned out perfectly fine.

Now, even though you are at home, you can still have a schedule. Feeding time, out to poo, playtime naptime. Make all these things the same time. Dogs love their schedules. My 9 month old starts following me around about 8:30 looking at me like when are we going to bed.

If you don't want to put him in your bad try putting the crate next to your bed, even on a table where he can still see you. That will help calm him. My girl was 13 weeks old when I got her. I could not contain her with a gate, she could climb 10 feet if she wanted to get to the other side. My gate was doulbled and she got over. I don't even wnat to think about how she got down. So from that night on she stayed in my bed.  She did have two accidents. But is good now.

So make up a schedule that fits your day. First thing in the morning as soon as he gets out of the crate ake him to the potty place and don't bring him back in till he goes. They say its best to leash a pup when its potty time so's they don't end up just running around. They will get the clue about what they are supposed to be doing. If leashed poopee, if not play time. Then feeding, more than likely more poopee time, playtime, rest(crate) time make p a schedule for yourself. Just like babies they need the same thing.

How big you think he will be? We have two huskeys that moved in across the street. I hope your heart can take the howl of the huskie, I can't it breaks my heart hearing them howl for some reason.

are you a member of other furoms...you mentioned that others would blast you for getting a pup so young...why do you figure that..if you knew it wasnt a good thing...and took her any way...it isnt any one's business but yours..and IF you did post else where i would preface it by saying I know she is young and i dont want to hear your opinion on that...something along those lines..your post just sounded a bit odd...im sorry if my answer seems  funny but i say if you got it flaunt it..and who cares...you obviously know better but got her any way..so what..tell every one about the precious pup..and as for crate training..dont keep reinforsing the fact that if she cries she gets out..your only undoing a good thing..stick to your guns..better days are coming..

Puttin:  She''ll probably be somewhere between 50-55 lbs.

huronbreeze:  I say people will blast me because people in PetSmart have already in their own "Special" way.  She was fully weaned when we got her.  When she starts crying at 5 am, I make sure she's completely quiet before I let her out.  I just know that if i were to quiet her then leave her she'd start right up again.   It's hard for me to just let her whine constantly night til she wears herself out because I can't cont. to sleep and my apartment neighbors I suspect would begin to complain.

Have you tried putting his crate next to your bed, also try putting one of your clothing items, maybe an old sweatshirt you have worn all day. The smell of you will comfort him, woops I mean her.

I agree with you, it seems many times I have read of people in the same situation, they state they know the pup is young, but people start going off on a tangent and forget that you have already stated that you know about the age thing. Big breed dogs usually leave at 6 to 8 weeks, from what I hear. But your will be fine. Lots of socailization with all sort of different dogs will be perfect. Bring her around other puppys . They can roughhouse and learn the doggie socialization skills a dog needs to know.
