Ivan has started doing this about a month ago. I asked my vet and he said it is not harmful, but if it continues to happen and last for a long time we might need to look into pallet surgery. But that would be an extreme case, and more-so common in the flat nose breeds.
I had read some articles before we got Lola about it, so i was prepared when she did it the first time. It's not very often that she does it, but it doesn't quite sound like sneezing....sounds more like she's trying to get that excess stuff out of her nose....backwards.
i have heard that is real common with the french bulldog breed, but so far i havent seen either one of mine do it. although this morning my female was running around sneezing wierd so she could have been having an episode of it
I usually am able to calm her down, I read the posts here and there and it seems that it is more common than I thought. I will definately be trying the rubbing the throat or touching the tongue idea.
I remember a couple people talking about it, but I couldn't remember if anyone thought it was something that needed to be checked out.
Wow, MPP, just as I clicked on this thread, Mollie started doing it!! LOL. She usually does it when she's excited or when she's pulling on her leash, when we used to hook the leash to her collar. I now use a harness with both dogs.
Of all my critters my cocker spaniel is the only one who does it and it is usually around the change of seasons. It drives me crazy often wakes me out of a dead sleep. He has done this for a few years now started when he was about two years old when we first moved from illinois to florida and has been doing it ever since. He is 5 years old now. When I first heard him do it I was really worried never having had a dog who did that before but the vet said it was not a big issue and he has never had any problems from it. It sounded like a wierd kinda croopy cough so it freaked me out at first.

Molly just looks at us when it is happening like "What is going on here????" lol I feel so bad because it sounds so horrible. Rocky does it once in awhile, but it is just a couple times and he is over it.
I almost wondered if it was an allergy type thing, but I guess that doesn't really make sense! lol
When they do it, it sounds painful. If you tried to immatate the sound your throat would hurt for a half hour!! lol (No I have not tried this, but my son did, rofl)
I think so. Rufus and Sasha, not Lilly as of yet. It does not sound like a sneeze reversed to me though. I always wonder if its the trachea thing. It does not happen too often though.
