Need Emergency help with Molly

She is hacking/barking like a seal, then does a gagging thing. like puking, but nothing comes out. She has been doing this over and over for more than an hour now. I am freaking out, can't seem to do anything to help her. It sounds horrid, worse than the reverse sneezing thing!!!

We had her on a leash earlier tonight at the dam....I rarely put her on one because she continously choke herself while pulling me along. That sounds horrible too and is embarassing. I always end up picking her up and carrying her because she is too dense to know she is choking herself.

We are just hoping she didn't hurt her throat. Man, she sounds so bad.....any thoughts or advice on this one?? Thanks

I hope she's okay.. If I were you I would make a phone call to an after-hours vet. I wouldn't bring her in unless she seems to be in real pain or if you think she may have a life-threatening problem. But you can talk to the vet on the phone, let him/her hear the noises Molly is making, and get his professional opinion about it. Ask about what to look for when checking for a throat injury caused by a collar, too. Often they will say to just keep an eye out but if this, this , or this happens we need you to bring her in. Anyhow it never hurts to call and can put your mind more at ease.

I could be wrong but it sounds like kennel cough.  I had 2 dogs with that.  Takes a bit but they get over it.  You just have to keep them calm.  It would be good to ask a vet though.

ok. after posting she calmed down and I laid down with her, but she just did it again and is now throwing up a off white mucousy mess. I am scared to death now.

well, done lots of reading. I gave her some cough medicine, read more than three articles saying it was ok to this.

I have now come to the conclusion that she is doing better downstairs, it is nice and cool. When she goes upstairs she starts again and it is really warm up there. She is curled up in a chair in my office sleeping at the moment.

Sheesh, I was flipping out and in tears 15 minutes ago.  She really scared me with this last round.

I was ready to pick her up and take her to the human hospital!!!!   lmao....they'd of stuck me on the sixth floor for sure.

I live in the middle of nowhere and I don't think we have a 24 hr vet anywhere near here....but you can bet your A$$ I will be checking it out in the morning!!! I will never be this scared again in the middle of the night!

Taking a deep breath and going to lay on the couch....she has kept poor Russ up all night and he has to be up at 5. He is just as upset as I am though....doubt he will sleep well.

OH...also gave her honey on bread...read twice that it helps a little. She seemed to enjoy that much better than the cough medicine!!!  lol

Thanks Shiny! I will call in the morning for sure and let them listen....but after all the reading I did, I do think it is Kennel Cough.

Wierd.....she hasn't been around any other dogs....the closest one is houses away, yet there is a byb four houses down. I wonder if any of their dogs have had this. They are reject people....I mean it literally....I could go on and on but I won't.

I read tonight that it can carry quite a distance to your dog.

I hope Rocky doesn't get it....but it is very likely.

Listen, if it is kennel cough, they will get thru it...It is like a doggie cold, dangerous to pups and elders only. The vet will give them antibiotics. There are several causative agents. Don't accuse the neighbors, could be lots of things. Mostly it is due to contact, like at the petstore, park, or vet's...My co-owners came down w/ it from a dog park...
For walking, get a pinch/prong collar, they trip on the sensation, and stop pulling. Once they "get it" you can go back to a regular collar...

Thanks Kittys Mom.  We discussed other options for collars last night so your advice is very helpful.

We haven't been anywhere other than short car rides for quite awhile. As a matter of fact, it is weird that it started after our trip to the dam park.  Coincidence, but weird.

Sure sounds like kennel cough...not too worried about it now that I read up on it, but the worse is I haven't slept but an hour. Neither has she.  You just feel helpless for them.

Oh well, we will get through this! lol

Wish I was on earlier, yes, yes I think it is K.C. Sounds exactly like Sasha's experience.  Foamy white stuff.  It just takes a toll on her badly, She had a seizure from the coughing last time. She has only had it twice, But I could not wait it out.

She has been quite most of the day, a couple coughing scenes but nothing like last night. She was breathing funny earlier, but that was just for a short time.

Due to the fact that the vet needed money right then and there, I was not able to take her today. I told them we would be there in the morning, long story, but I just didn't have it. This month has killed me financially.  Prom, Graduation, two birthdays, my fathers surgery(eating out) and being off work for almost two weeks to be with my family.  YIKES!  I am broker than broke. And it really pissed me off today when they wouldn't see her and wouldn't let me pay them tomorrow. I called a couple places, same story. I should have just shown up...think they would have turned me away???

I almost cried thinking I couldn't take her because of money! Made me feel pretty crappy!

But, honestly, after watching her today, we are almost wondering if she has asthma or allergies. The lady I spoke to said it is possible, of course, they would have to see her to know.  But last night she was running in a field that was grown up over head....imagine all the crap that flew in that little nose! lol

I didn't think logically about all this til today...last night I was too busy FREAKIN' OUT!!!! lol

I guess I will know for sure tomorrow.

Good to hear she's doing better. It could be allergies... You might talk with some pug people too. Don't quote me on this one, as I know near to nothing about pugs but I think because of the smooshy face they can have some issues. Hoping it's just something seasonal or easily fixable though!

I'd go with a harness for awhile.  that way when she pulls, it wont irritate her already irritated throat.

I never had a dog with kennel cough, but it could also be pneumonia.  Dont know if kennel cough is a dry or wet cough.  Dont let it go too long before going to the vet, you don't want a simple thing to progress to something very serious.
