I took my dogs to whiterock lake dog park today and I took them to the part with the water. I thought trinity would like it cause she loves the creek at the plano dog park so I thought she would love this but she wouldn't go in all she did was get her paws wet. It makes me wonder. Does my dog even know how to swim? Can anyone help me anwser this weird question.
I have heard that dobies generally dont like water but i have seen some pics of dobes enjoying the water and its seems they are able to swim no probs .. Harvey my dobie is not always keen on the water whether he is scared i'm not sure or if its just because he dont like it i dont know ..
But he does enjoy going in standing water i.e ponds water that collects of the fields (which gets pretty deep but doesn't like flowing water like rivers etc. I did buy him a paddling pool but as yet he has not go in it .. but its early days yet! I do get in the water myself so if he can see me having fun then he will join me because he's like my little shadow ... its more tempting for him aswell when i get his favourite toys and throw them around acting like big kid .. the more excited he gets the less worried he is an joins me. With Harvey its all about taking it slow an making it a positive experience
That's funny. Eli, our last doberman, loved to take baths and showers and he loved the kiddie pool I bought for them to all lay in when it was hot. He just loved water!! Now Lexie, on the other hand, she will WALK AROUND a puddle in the middle of a sidewalk!! I don't know yet if she would lay in a kiddie pool, but she didn't seem to really MIND taking a bath, the only bath I've given her since we've had her. She was good in the bathtub, so I dont' know if she'll like the water either. I'm pretty sure though, that all dogs are equipped with the ability to swim. My little ones know how, and I never had to teach them anything, they just did it automatically. We keep them on their leashes when we let them jump off a dock though, just in case. lol
Only one way to find out, go swimming with him. Either in a lake or pool, if he follows you out, then he likes it. I suppose you might have to bring him out once, so he can get a good dose of it.
When I was little I had a 1 year old yorkie and he loved the water but when he entered the water he would just sink. He couldn't get his feet to kick right. I hope that made since.he died at the age of 1 1/2 ny drowning. We closed his doggy door but one of the neibor kids went into our backyard and opened the doggy door so he could play with my dog. Well he forgot to put the dog back into house and close the doggy door so by the time my mother and me got home he had died. I was so said that I never bought myself another dog until I got trinity.
I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your yorkie!
Most of the dogs I have ever had have always been a little skeptical of trying to swim with the initial visits to the lake. Slowly but surely over time I find they get more adventurous until the day comes that it's difficult to get them to get out of the water.
Take it slow, go in yourself, make it alot of fun but don't force the issue. Chloe was very unsure of herself the 1st summer but by the middle of summer I was able to convince her to swim a short distance to me and when I saw her get nervous I would gently support her and head back towards shore until her paws could touch. After a few times of this she quickly became a pro & she can keep up with Farley and many times swim faster than him!
The only dogs I ever had that regardless of the amount of encouragement that would have absolutely nothing to do with swimming were my Great Danes. Both of them might concede to get their paws wet but that was the extent of it.
It is true that not all dogs can swim. Some breeds, like bullies, usually can't. And there are some individual dogs that although their breed is noted for swimming just can't get it - a friend has a Chesapeake Bay Retriever and that dog has to have a life jacket on or she wouldn't survive. But with the life jacket she'd stay in all day if she let her.
I would love to get into the water but the only place I know of where I can take my dog off the leash and get into the water is the white rock lake dog park and you can't get into the water there cause the ramp that is there for the dogs to get into the water has fallen apart so there are pieces of concrete everywhere. If anyone knows of another dog park that has a fenced in part of a lake or creek can they please tell me where it is? or at least the name of it.
Your absolutly right! Dobermans as a rule do not like water. There are the exceptions and those are the funniest dogs around! You can't get one of my dobies in the water for nothing! Well the male will drag you in if there is a female in heat in the water then you better be ready to water ski cuz your going in weather you like it or not! I had both my dogs in water from little pups and it made no difference they hate the water.

Well trinity my doberman loves to play in the water at the house and at the creek by the plano dog park but the lake she won't go in. Its just kind of odd if she likes creeks and all this other water stuff then y doesn't she like lakes. she also doesn't like getting a bath but alot of dogs don't like getting a bath
