Grey Hounds

I was talking to my mother about grey hounds the other day cause once we get rid of her dog ( which chews up everything ) I was thinking about getting a grey hound. My mother told me that she thinks they are ugly dogs becasue they are so skinny but she likes dobermans and dobermans are sort of skinny. What does everybody else think about grey hounds?

i really am not trying to sound rude when i say this ,but the term "getting rid of her dog" doesnt hit me well. a dog chews for several different reasons and a big one is boredom. i know there are some good reasons for rehoming a pet. maybe you could suggest that she takes her dog to classes. and buy some good chew toys . if she is "getting rid of" of the dog simply because he chews things, what is going to happen with the next dog if he does the same thing? and the next? getting a dog should be with the idea that this is a lifelong commitment. not something to "exchange " if we dont like the previous one. greyhound pups are chewers also as with most pups. i got this off a greyhound breeders site so that you could see what they have to say about their temperment:

They are terrific little dogs, and I will be very honest with you about their personality's, and they do vary.  Some want a 10 year old boy to play with, some will go on a ten mile hike, or kayak the Colorado River with you.  Others are introverted and shy.  They are all very different.  Unlike any dog you have ever had.  All of them like to be on your lap every minute.  All of them will sleep with you (want it or not).  All of them love you so much they are lost without you.  All puppies (until about 2 years old) make confetti out of paper, pull stuffing out of blankets, and have razor sharp teeth and nails.  This is what all puppies do, not just Ig's.  Don't buy a dog if your life style is not ready for it.  If you leave them home all day with nobody to play with, don't expect them to lay around  and wait.  They will find their own entertainment.  Don't expect them to go 4 hours without going to the bathroom, (could you?).  They Have to have a doggie door going into a FENCED yard.  It will help you sleep because they can go out when they want to.

i just hate to see pets end up in a shelter ,when a little time and effort on the part of the owner could have prevented it.

Well he has had training basic and advanced and he has alot of toys even a kong ball. And his chewing is really bad. Hes not going to a shelter my uncle has another heeler mix and he will be taking my mothers dog. We told him about my mothers dogs chewing problem and he said it doesn't matter he will still take him. I'm not planning on getting a greyhound puppy. I want a retired grey hound racer.

If you put the dog in an area where there is nothing to chew, he will chew nothing.
It is your fault the animal is in areas that have items that are chewable available...
I have a book that says there are no bad dogs, just owners that cannot solve problems.
I have found that removing access to a problem is the best way to prevent it from happening...

In the evenings my dogs are locked up in our kitchen. My mothers dogs chewing problem has gotten so bad he chews on the walls. There is nothing in the kitchen for him to chew the gates we have up to keep the dogs in the kitchen he chews on those as well. I even took him to the vet casue I thought that something might be wrong with his teeth or something but they said he is fine.

It is a healthy thing that they unfortunately love to do.
My Labs are huge chewers.
I have big cages that they live in when they are inside the house. If they are not right there, supervised and watched, they are in their big cage.
These cost about $120. + $10. shipping.
If you get a catalog, the cheaper ones are available on the phone...
This is the closest that on-line comes to.

We have tryed working on his problems for a year. Also in order for me to put him a cage or anything it would need to be big enough for 2 dogs. My doberman loves to be near him and if she can not sleep with him then both of them will not eat or do anything. Also another reason we are having to give the dog away is because we are moving and we are being forced by my grandparents to give him away cause they are buying us new furniture ( he chewed those up right in front of me and my mother ) and she won't get the furniture for us unless we give the dog away. Also its not my dog and my mother called my uncle and told him that he could have her dog if he wants. And she never asked how  Ifelt about considering I bought the dog.

These cages can fit two dogs, or you can put two side by side, like I do.
My dogs are all real happy. And boy, can they chew...
