So what can your pets do?? I thought it would be fun to see what we have all taught our dogs. and when you trained them did you use praise, treats, or a little of both?
I taught my dogs with treats, except I'm teaching Hyde with praise.
Winnie....sit,shake right, shake left, sit pretty, stay, down, come, crawl, rollover, turn(spin), turn lights on/off, find it, speak, leave it, drop, wait, fetch, get in the water, go to your spot
Lana....sit, laydown,come,shake,fetch
Sydney...sit,down,shake,speak,get crazy, sit pretty, leave it, drop
Harvey seems to have trained himself to act like a complete dork lol ..but he has learned to lie down, wait, leave, sit .. and come back when called which has an 85% success rate but were working on it
I would like to train him to put his toys back in his basket on command ..the problem is he wont carry toys in his mouth for long he just drops them as soon as i come close ..
Do you have any ideas on how to train him to do this
Im not sure Twink, I have always thought about teaching my girls that but i was never sure how to go about it. Does he know the command drop? If not maybe you can teach him the drop it command with a tennis ball, once he has that down you could bring him over to the toy basket with a ball in your hand. Try and make it so his head it kind of over the basket. Give him the ball, let him hold it for a second and make him drop the ball in the basket. maybe once he starts dropping it in the basket, give it a new word, like "put your toy away" or something. This is just an idea, i have no clue how to teach that, but maybe that would work.
Oh everytime he drops it in the basket give him a treat or praise, whatever motivates him more, and then he might want to drop stuff in the basket to get a treat.
the only tricks Calvin can do are: sit, lay down, fetch, he will go get his ball when i say "go get your ball !", he doesnt understand stay quite yet but we are working on it.
This generation of Labs has not been taught as many fancy things as some. I take them all to a basic obedience class. They know sit, down, stay, come, out and kennel[in], be quiet, be careful, don't touch, and a variety of phrases that I repeat every day. My mom was startled that I spelled some things in front of the brood **** that I gave her. I said , well they do know English, you know. I keep the conversation simple with them, like little kids, they understand most questions[do you want dinner, to go out, cookies, treats...] Past generations I have taught retrieving in water with guns and live birds, sled, seeing eye, attack, and ranch handy things like bringing rakes and brushes from the barn, leading/driving horses, opening and closing gates. Depends what I am doing and how much help I need...Haven't hunted this year, so nobody is trained to do it. They retrieve instinctively from 6wks. of age...
