Well nothing fascinating here but i thought i would share a couple of pics on what i have been working on.
I went to a farm auction about 2 months ago and they had some real old junky looking furniture there. Well this table caught my eye. It was very old, covered in a thick tar coloured varnish, with one leg about to drop off and looked like it would have been better of being burned. Well as the auctioneer come round i put my hand up to bid.. I was so pleased when no-one else wanted it and i got it for £1.00!!
Further down the line at the same aution i got 5 chairs that had definatley seen better days and i got them also for a £1.00 ..no-one else wanted them!
well it has taken me a lot of blood, sweat and tears but i have nearly finished the last chair. Once i had removed the varnish formt he table and chairs and sanded them down for what seemed a life time and stained the wood there was a beautifull set of oak chairs and an oak dining table.
well heres the pics~
this is the chair (the one i have got left to do) with a finished one /before and after
Good for you, great job. I helped my boss strip his wood of 30 years of paint, big job. Mostly I did it. LOL So I know how much work it is. You did a very nice job.
It was really funny one day when my boss had the electrician in doing some work and he told him that the stripper would be here soon, LOL
Here is my daughters bed that I found at a garage sale for about 30 bucks. I redid it. I had it sand blasted then I added a new coat of paint to it. I love the old iron beds. And her walls aren't that yellow. They are a light buttery yellow. I don't know why the pic looks so bright. We also put in the new flooring. Previously there was green shag carpet.
I'd love to get some antique furniture or something from an auction or estate sale, but this area is still so new to me, I'm still trying to find out WHERE the auction and sales are :) Antique stores are plentiful here, but we've only gone into one. Bad thing about being in the North East is that everyone knows what their antiques are worth. Unlike in Kansas where people just say, "eh I think this is how much it's worth" and leave it at that.
MPP~ those are some great pieces you got there. I have yet to try the crackle glaze when i find something suitable. The 2nd one looks lovely aswell ~ i love the aged look to some furniture.
Paige~ I love that bed it looks very french. I would love one but i have yet to find one at a bargain price.
Hunters~ You should give it a go..its really not that difficult but can be time consuming. Maybe get a couple of books that should give you some inspiration
lil-exorcist~ The bargains are out there but i have never found one in an antique shop, they are to wise to the value of things. I find mine at Car Boot sales (if you know what they are-im not sure if you have them in the u.s) aswell as auctions. basically i have a quick check over the item and the more battered and abused it looks the cheaper you can get it. Most people cant look past the exterior and dont think what it could look like
There are beds like that all over here. I found a beautiful one the other day but it was already redone. They were asking 300 for it. But there is a place outside of town that has about 50 of them really cheap because they need a good fixen.
twink, you did a beautiful job with your furniture !
mpp. i would love to see more pics ! i love the old fashioned looking furniture !
paige. the bed is beautiful too. i just got rid of our brass bed. it was getting tarnished looking. i had no idea you could paint them !
i am a bargain hunter. i love thrift stores. my mom tells me a have a knack for finding the good stuff. but its just a matter of knowing what to look for when you go. i am not allowed to get anymore "stuff" .quinn says i have way too much already . lol what do you think?
I have never done this before, so let's see how this works...
You can click on them to make them larger I think.
OK, so the octagon table in center of room is really a poker table. I have a bottle addiction. I love wine bottles and decanters. Check out the tall ones in front of my fake fireplace!! lol That fireplace was from the 70's and bright red when I got it at the auction for a buck!
Each of the chairs were a dollar each, Rocky chewed my rocker for me when we first got him!! Dang dog! lol
I am a silver/pewter/chrome junkie. My kitchen is full of it, I only showed part of it! lol
Our downstairs is all nautical and pirates. Hard to see, I only showed on pic of that room.
Dusty, Russ is always telling me "ENOUGH ALREADY!" lol I never listen. I bring in new and take out old. I call it "recycling" I make as much or more than what I paid for the stuff when I sell it in garage sales, ebay, or flea markets. I could go on and on.....all this stuff is a passion for me. I have a hard time parting with alot of the stuff I sell on Ebay, but I have to make myself do it!!!!!
OH! I almost forgot, I just tiled the foyer and I am still working on this bathroom, it is almost done.
