how much should I charge?

Since I need some extra cash, I have been spreading the word to friends and family that I will start perfroming dog walking services and anything else they might need involving their dogs. I love walking especially with a dog as a companion, im just not sure how much to charge. I would take the dog on either a 30 min walk or an hour walk, depending on the dog and what they can handle.

My mom called me yesterday and told me her bestfriend needs a dog walker for 5 days. So I told her I would do it but im not sure what to charge. Since it is my moms bestfriend I'll charge her less then I would other people.(probly ten bucks?)

For everyone else I was thinking I will charge $20 and that would include, a long walk, and ,maybe a play date with my dogs too or maybe a trip to the dog park. Is $20 a good price? to much, to little?

What would you guys expect to pay a dog walker?

Hmmm..I'm not even sure myself. What I would do, is look in the yellow pages for dog sitters or dog walkers, and just call them pretending to look for someone and ask what they charge and kind of go off that. What a fun way to make extra money! Better than hauling steel like my hubby and me do, ick. lol

20 bucks really seems a little cheap. But thats just me. I would difenitly call around and ask around what people charge.

20 bucks could be a good price for a half hour, but I think its kind of cheap for an hour. Around here (CT) the average is about 15-20 for one dog for a half hour I guess it depends on your area though! When I was looking for a pet sitter I used www.petsit.com--you can type in your area and alot of places with websites will come up and you can see what people charge! I think its a great way to make extra cash!

I use to do that before I moved up too dallas. My prices always depended on the size of the dog and what I would have to do with it. For example: If I was going to be house sitting for some people who wanted to leave there dog at home and say it was a great dane. Then I would charge them 10 dollars a day. If it was a smaller dog then I would charge 5 dollars a day. All I every did was take care of the dogs. Such as cleaning up after them caring to there needs if they have speical needs walking them feeding them things like that.

So you would just be walking the dog?

I don't know of anyone that just walks dogs. Everything I have heard of is feeding and letting them outside to potty.

My friend pays someone $45.00 a day to come feed her dogs and let them out twice a day (3 dogs).

We paid a neighbor (12 yr old) to feed my dogs while I was in TN $10.00 per day.

My son is feeding another neighbor's dog twice a day and they are paying him $5.00 per day. I really think he should be getting at least $10.00 per day but since we are neighbors and friends $5.00 is fine.

I did pet sitting and charged 5$ a visit.  Not sure on walking a dog.  It's a great idea though.

Syd, thats a great idea!  It's even got me thinking about it because there is nothing like this in our area.  I researched a little on the net tonight and came across NAPPS (Nat'l Assoc. of Professional Pet Sitters).  http://www.petsitters.org/

There is so much good information there.  Its worth a look if you plan on making this into a part time business or something.  I had no idea that there was such a demand for this kind of thing.

The prices I came across averaged $15 per 30 minute visit (plus $3 for each additional dog) and giving medications orally or through injection was additional....like $1 additional per dog.  Of course, this was more for 'pet sitting' and not dog walking, but you can always broaden your horizons!!

i would call around and see what the going rate is. i am the pet sitter for my sisters two boxers whenever they go somewhere. i would do it for free for her but she always gives me 50 bucks. its usually just weekends. i just let them out of the kennel to run around and then if its hot i swim in their pool or do whatever. they have over an acre of backyard and its like a park. so to me its like total peace and quiet. i usually end up staying most of the day ! lol
