Moreover, get the state or county to make and pay for those signs. Local enforcement will begin when you make enough noise in the right place. Start taking pictures, NOW, Of the animals, of the problem. Keep accurate easily to reproduce records of the money you spent on just one dog, if there is a class action suit against someone that is caught, the county will get money first, but you may get compensation down the line, plus you can show why these animals can not be saved cheaply. Now, enforcement. You can squeek all you want about puppies and kittens. You will get no results. The ONLY thing the county will respond to is public pressure about health issues. You don't want rabid dogs biting your kids. These dogs are unvaccinated. They are interacting with wild animals that may be carrying rabies. The ONLY reason people license dogs is to insure that most dogs have a Rabies shot, that is how that practise[licensing] came about. Those animals are a health risk. The people that dump them are creating a health risk. The ticks that they harbor may also carry Lyme disease.... Go with that stream of thought you will succeed. If IMMEDIATE results in signs and enforcement do not occur at county level, go up to the next level. Start with a relatively highly placed law enforcement agent. Let them know you will not be dropping the ball, call around and see who will get the best results. Don't let a supposed sympathetic ear stonewall you. Insist on immediate results. It is a health hazard for heaven's sake, tell them.
hows it going with the new pup? have you had any luck with finding a home for him? i feel so bad for you. it would be hard having to deal with it. we had so many dogs when we had our farm. one was our own dog and the rest were all dogs that had been dumped along the highway and ended up at our house. we just fed them and made them all beds in the barn.
i know. we did find homes for some of them, but it seemed like we just kept getting more. our dog food bill was so high. we just didnt have the heart to take any of them to the shelter. i hate going in there as it is. i want to bring them all home.
I think at this point, if it was me, i'd be calling news stations and hounding them to do a report on the problem and how illeagle it is. Just a thought.
I woke up to gunfire this morning at 6AM. The mother dog was shot and killed by a man who lives on our road. I guess she had came to his yard looking for food. Two other pups are still roaming the street, and the pup we got is spending the weekend at the vet due to new found health issues.
I am more than a little upset. The vet is working to try and find a place for the other 2 pups if we can catch them. I just hope we can before they stumble into the same yard their mother did.
Yesterday the mans kids told us that their dad was going to shoot the dogs if they came into his yard. We tried for several hours last night to catch them, but couldn't find them. These farms out here are hundreds of acres.......and the dogs could be anywhere. When I see them in the road, they are just hesitant to come to me.
The vet has given us his cell number so that if we can catch the other pups, we can get a hold of him immediately. He says that the shelters here are just over run and there is no place for them, but he will keep trying. Another problem is that most shelters wont take strays. If we pay for the sservices to get them healthy then they could be taken in.......but thats going to be very expensive.......and will only be in vain if the animals get pts. I'm just a nervous wreck right now. Its just a bad situation.
wow ansy. that is so sad about the mother dog ! i think it would have been just as easy to put a little food out rather than kill an innocent dog that is just hungry. that is sad. i hope the pups get found before they meet with the same fate as their mother. i cant believe anyone could be so cold as to shoot a harmless animal .
Wow. I'm so sorry. It would be very rough on the heart to live somewhere where you see that kind of thing weekly or close to it. I wish I had an answer that would solve the problem. I do think Kitty's ideas are the way to go. You cannot take care of the problem alone and nobody expects you to, except maybe YOU, because we all feel like we just have to DO something when we see tragic things happening. If you go the way Kitty suggested, it just might be a way for you to help by forcing others to help... like the people who your tax dollars pay to enforce laws--- including animal dumping laws! Best of luck to you.
