How many of you keep your indoor cats on heartworm preventative? We got my kitten in my, and she's had doses for May, June and July but when I told mom she needs more, she said "She doesn't need it" What do you think? My last cat never took hearworm medicine and never got it. I do have my dogs on Interceptor, since they are outdoors only(I know, it sucks)
I have never used it on any pets. We had two dogs blood tested negative for it. The vet said of several thousand tested, none had shown infection. We have elected to just test for it annually...
i think its more common if you live in an area that's heavily infested with mosquitoes. i know its not a big thing here in washington state. here is a link that shows the what states are more common for heartworm
My parents in KS have never had any of their cats on heartworm prevention and they're outside kitties. Course they aren't as paranoid as I am when it comes to things, kitties went for a couple of years before I took one (of the two they had at the time) to get her leukemia shot.
I'm not sure you should. Hype and paranoia are one thing, but it involves putting a chemical in the critter's blood 24/7. Just something that I object to on principal. What is better, the cure or the problem
I just barely started mine on it. I thought I was the only one weary of it. I told the vet that I did not like putting poisons into their bodies and he said it is wayyyy different than it used to be. So now we have them on interceptor. Everyone oneline always sounds like they use it.
The only reason I should give trinity heartworm prevention is because we got my mothers dog loki. The dog she had adopted had heartworms and I was told that trinity could catch it but that was like a year ago but I am still worried that she might get it.
PD, you can get her tested and have her put on Interceptor, I think I paid about $20 for 6 months for the 11-25lbs, So getting it for trinity would maybe be around $25 to $30 for 6 months worth. Peace of mind too, if she's outside alot.
I do the heartworm preventative for the dogs, and they only go out with me. I use 1% solution Ivermectin. But we have LOTS of mosquitoes here and all it takes is one bite. I would not use heartworm prevention on a pet that was strictly indoors.
