It's a chicken frenzy at our house!!! We ordered 34 baby chickens and they always add a few extra in (1-3 chicks) in case some die in shipment....well.....something must have went wrong because they added in 20 extra chickens and NONE died in shipment...lol!!
I now have 54 baby chickens in my living room.......eating and drinking like crazy. Our home sounds like a barn, the cats are spazzing, and JT was mad because he couldn't sleep...lol
We ordered 25 "assorted chickens"....since it was my first time...I didn't want to start with a really expensive group and the assorted groups are cheaper. On top of the assorteds we ordered 2 Polish and 2 Lakenvelders plus I had a coupon for 5 rare breed chicks. That how I got the total of 34. The only ones I can recognize are the Polish because they have the top notches on their head. The rest...we'll have to wait and see. Some are yellow, some are red, some are brown, some are black and some are mixed colors.
The rare breeds have feathers on their feet and there is a pair of Turkens in there as well. Ugliest things Ive ever seen!!! It took me a few minutes to figure out what they were. When I got the first one out of the box, I thought the others had plucked the feathers off its neck....then I found another one.....and I realized what they were. Freakin Turkens!!!!!...lol
Oh yeah, some of the little feathered footed ones are gray......Usually Cochins have the feathered feet but I don't know what breed of Cochins they are (Cochins are a smaller chicken). Once they feather out (in about 6 weeks), I'll know more about what it what...lol
The brooder I had ready for them wasn't big enough (since we got 20 additional chicks) so I ran out to the store and got a spiderman swimming pool to put them all in...lol. Its one of those kind with the blow up rings that makes the walls stand up.....I was blowing like crazy to get that thing set up this morning. Its 5 foot in diameter and right in my living room....TOTALLY in the way!...lol
Anyway, I have to get things in order now.....and let the cats know that these aren't "kitty treats"...lol. Fatty has been acting like King Tiger this morning.....slinking around them...but he hasn't tried to bother them yet........I do have a top on the pool though so the cats can't get to them, plus I put the cats in the bedroom when Im not going to be in the living room with them.
The chicks like pecking at our fingernails....so cute!! I'll post pics of Old McAnsy's farm tonight!
Sounds cute! We just watched a show last night about baby chicks. It was called "dirtiest jobs"?they were sexing the chicks, poor things they were like throwing them around, shooting them in the neck with vaccines from a machine. They said they were fine and seemed fine but poor babies what they go through in the first 24 hrs. I thought it was tough for a newborn human! Anyway they mentioned they had like 110 different breeds at that place and there are really over 400. I had no idea! My husband's dad is now a chicken farmer. Has been for the last 5 yrs or so. I heard his place smells to high heaven!
Have fun with the baby chickies and can't wait to see pics!
I love eggs and call me crazy but there is no way I could eat an egg that my chicken laid. That would just gross me out. I don't know why but it would.

Silly, it would gross you out if you knew how OLD those eggs are by the time they even get to the market... Once you've had fresh eggs you don't eat the other kind anymore. The color and texture are totally different, the yolk is so orange, it is almost red, in a newly laid egg.
Kitty, I just said I LOVE eggs. Did you really have to come on here and tell me something to gross me out?
When I crack open an egg and it looks red inside I throw it away. I would be throwing all of the eggs away. I was making Reese's cup brownies once. I was so excited I couldn't stand myself. I had everything in the bowl except the egg. I cracked the egg and put it in the bowl. The yolk had a red tint to it and I wanted to sit in the floor and cry. Chocolate and peanut butter has to be the best thing on earth, besides birthday cake and ice cream of course. I decided I just wasn't supposed to have those brownies. I guess it was fate.

The place where my horse is has chickens and other birds. They have silkies and another one that's name starts with a B but i forgot.....lol It is a mini chicken and it is soooo cute. And she had a little black rooster that thinks he's tougher then the big turkey's and geese......lol
Ansy, that sounds like so much fun! I wish I were in your situation. My plan is to run a farm someday when I retire or can afford it. My parents and my in-laws both have farms and I just love all the animals.
I'm with Kitty's Mom on the egg thing. I'm not even that big on eggs (darn Atkins diet ruined eggs for me, lol) but I LOVE fresh farm eggs. I remember the first time I had one. I was like 7 and staying at my Aunt's farm, and she was making breakfast. The milk was from their cow, the butter made from the milk of the cow, homemade bread, potatoes from the garden made into hash browns...and then she asked me if I wanted eggs, and when I said 'yes' she handed me a basket. I was totally clueless until she directed me to the hen house. It was so fun. Some of those chickens are crazy though! Totally freaked me out a few times trying to grab those eggs! Hehe

Well, we have me with the killin' roosters, and Watcher- with the smell... to pee on your parade, Ansy. You go girl... Having chicks was a very important thing to me. I also was very excited by it. I decided what I liked, then refined it. All that time, there were more eggs than even I could GIVE away. Eggs with blood, for you squeamish, are not half as bad as eggs, uncollected, then tended by the bird, collected late, and having a half formed chick inside it, when you crack it into the pan...

i've been there before with the half formed chick thing..and fresh eggs *yum-yum* beats the mass produced ones hands down
Well, I fell asleep and didn't get to post pics...but will get Barney to post some later today. The house still isn't quiet.....lol....54 chicks will not all sleep at once.
As far as the smell.....yeah I'm aware of what can happen. They will be moved into the shed after 3 days of being inside and will remain there for about 5 more weeks before being moved into their permanent home which is a chicken coop with a fenced outside area. We are going to free range them (let them eat where they want in grassy areas each day), but it will be done by moving the coop each day and not by turning them loose. There is a hungry hawk that lives here and he'd love to have a few tender chickens each day...lol. Anyway, about the smell.....They are on newspaper and wood chips. I change the newspaper and wood chips twice a day and so far we haven't smelled anything. They are just like any other inside animal......you have to clean up after them (like changing a litter box).
The hatchery recommended I put sugar in their water for 3 days. Its like chicken "crack"....they can't get enough of it. Maybe thats why they are so active...lol. None have died yet......but I'm sure tomorrow may bring a different story. Within the first week of having them, its just natural for some to die. They are fragile creatures at this age, and the fact that they think they are ducks don't help. They jump in their water and get their baby feathers all wet - sure sign of pneumonia if not careful. They do have a heat lamp to help dry them off and warm them up though.
I just coughed and heard a hundred little feet scatter on the newspaper....lol!!
The kids complained last night because we had chicken for supper....lol I told them to get use to it! Ivan is at the back door and the mama dog is at the front door waiting for a gracious gulp, and the cats are shut up in the bathroom. They are not happy. This is their domain and they do not like it being taken over by 54 chickens...lol
They are comical creatures....we've laughed so much since they've been here. Its hard to get use to the Freaks though....lol (the turkens). They are not pretty. And puttin, I'm not sure if a turken is a mix between a turkey and a chicken or not......if so, they'd have had to have started by artificial insemination.....if its even possible. They may just be some rare breed of chicken. They have no feathers on their neck and the back of their head. When full grown, they have a very long neck (still no feathers on it) but otherwise look like a chicken.
Ahhhh....back to sleep for a bit. 5:30 rolls around in just under 2 hours!
