Well, when it rains it pours. I went in for my MRI yesterday morning and before my MRI they did a lot of blood work on me. It turns out I have diabetes and extremely high cholesterol. The diabetes doesn't surprise me. Its in my family really bad and I had it while I was pregnant. I rarely eat sweets or carbs for that reason but I guess thats just not enough for me. What did shock me is the cholesterol. Its supposed to be below 130 and mine is over 500. I feel like I'm going to have a heart attack at any second. I'm 26 yrs. old and I weigh 115 at 5'4". I'm in really good shape. I have a BMI of 20.5. I work out 6 days a week. 3 of the days I do kickboxing for an hour and a half. How can my cholesterol be so high? I'm so scared. With diabetes and high cholesterol I feel my only choice is to go vegan. I can't eat carbs because of the diabetes and I can't eat animal products because of the high cholesterol. I am going in, in the morning for a fasting blood test for my cholesterol and diabetes. They're hoping its just something I ate, but what if its not? Does anybody have any advice on how to be vegan?

Wow! I'm sorry, what shocking news for a young lady in good physical condition! I like my meat, but maybe you can google vegan for some good ideas. Did you talk with the doctor about what kind of diet would be best and why on earth your cholesterol is so high? I almost wonder if the test was a fluke. I bet the test in the morning will look different.
My father-in-law had extremely high cholestrol and had a heart attack at 45. They changed their diet and eat only fish and turkey for meat. They eat more whole grains and his cholestrol is much better. He is now 63 years old. I hope it turns out that it was just something you ate.
No more junk food for you, girl... Ya gotta fit that wine colored dress, and be voluptuous in it, for the hubby... I can tell you some easy veggie recipes, that the kids will love... Growing up, my girlfriend was one of 3 generations of vegitarians. All I can say is, don't get too radical w/it. I was 100# lighter as a vegetarian. I felt REAL healthy. Medium ground would see you as a real star. Those that only dabble in health, only dabble in it's benefits...
*fingers crossed* hopefully the second test will come out with a better result. it must have been a huge shock . My family has problems with cholesterol and nearly all the women have gestational diabetes (sp? diabetes brought on by pregnancy) apart from a lucky couple. So genetically its almost certain im gonna have it also . I'm vegetarian. Not because i have issues with meat and the way its killed but because of the family history with cholesterol and i luckily don't like the taste of meat.
I was a vegetarian when I was young[because of the Iran-Iraq war, anything that bled made me puke]. I was #100 lighter, people all asked if I had a food disease. I ate like a horse, literally...
At your age and weight, that cholesterol level seems way off to me. Yes, it is possible, but I believe the fasting diet will provide more accurate results for you. I have dont the fasting diet 3 times for diabetes checks (when I was pregnant) and they are gruesome. I hated them and always felt like passing out before they were over.
Unfortunatley, fruits and some veggies are VERY high in carbs. You have to watch those. A singel banana, apple, or pear can have as many carbs as a candy bar. Beans and potatoes are very high as well. With the diabetes, your body doesn't produce the insulin needed to process the carbs from foods. While fruits and veggies are normally healthy foods for us all, they can be a diabetics worst nightmare.
I'm sure your doctor will offer you lots of advice, after making the correct diagnosis. Which type of Diabetes Mellitus do you have? 1 or 2?
With your cholesterol, a low fat may be all that is needed. Animal products do not always = high cholesterol. Meat can be very low fat if you enjoy eating it. Instead of real eggs, try Egg Beaters or just use the egg whites.
Sometimes, we unfortunately have diseases which 'overlap' within out bodies. What is good for this disease can hurt the other...and so on. In this case, your doctor will adv ise you of what to do, but there are plenty of great recipes out there for people in your situation......but first, lets wait for the results of the fasting test. I think that will tell us much more.
I just got back from getting my blood work done. I have 2 bruised arms now. This was the quickest doctor visit I ever had. They didn't do the 3 hour diabetes test on me because they find it hard to believe I have diabetes as high as it was and cholesterol as high as it was so they only took two tubes of blood and they said if this one came back high they would do the 3 hour test. I had it done while I was pregnant and I hated it. I so hope they both come back normal. They said if my LDL cholesterol came back as bad as it was before that my doctor would probably put me straight on meds. I think I'm too young for the meds. but I'm thinking that if I do meds. and watch my diet that I can get it down and than go off of the meds. and keep it down. I'm really hoping that they both come back normal. Another thing I found out about today was that my triglycerides were really high. They've always been high, around 200 when they're supposed to be at 130 I think? Somewhere in the low 100's anyway. This time they were over 600 which isn't any shock since my blood sugar came back really elevated and blood sugar and triglycerides go hand in hand. They said I would probably find out tomorrow or Monday what the results are. I have no idea when I'll find out the results of my MRI. They said it would probably be a couple of weeks. My doctor was going to send it over to a brain doctor (forget what they're called right now) to look it over so it will depend on how long it takes the MRI place to get it to my doctor and than my doctor will send it on its way. Oh Jeez!

Since you are going to have to alter you diet. They call it a WOL Way of Life. It won't be a diet it will be a WOL. I have heard many people say that Suzanne Summers recipes are perfect for the diabetic. You can still eat meat and lower your cholesteral. I have done it. Her diet consists of whole grains, veggies, meat, non fat milk. Butter and even cream are used. The thing is, to keep your carbs and protiens separate. If consumed together thats when you gain weight. When combined your body sees the whole meal as a carb meal and will store it as fat. Protien meals will mainly just digest and not be stored as fat. I would check it out, I can safely say her recipes are delishes and not lacking in flavor at all. So if you are going to have to do a major change it should be a tastey one. She has a website. She also has a doctorate (sp) dietitician. Check it out,
Years ago during my one bout with quitting smoking, I had to have a blood test done just several days after I quit because I was on medication that could affect liver function. The doctor's office called to tell me my liver was fine, but my blood sugar was through the roof. I had been eating more than two bags of Tootsie Pops a day as well as a couple of pints of ice cream. I did the fasting test, and the results came back just fine. I hope something strange influenced your test, too.

Unfortunately, I have known several very skinny, athletic people who have had very high cholesterol and triglycerides. One was a very thin, runner.
I think it is just hereditary. My husband has nieces and nephews who are as young as 12 years old and already on medication. I had my own son checked out not too long ago. Thankfully, it is ok.
If the doctor says you need it, you better take the meds, girl.
My husband use to always have high cholesterol and he is on meds and it is fine now.
