A while ago i posted on how Fez keeps having accidnets on my bed and pillows and stuff. Well we started closing the bedroom door when we leave so there are no more surprises, but just now i got the biggest surprise of them all! I came home and smelled poop, i didnt know where it was coming from, i went into our guest room and found that Fez had peed and pooped all over my down comforter on the guest bed and my boyfriends cherished bear!!!! I'll have to throw everything away, its that bad! I cant take this anymore! Im gonna have to start keeping him in one room and one room only. I feel bad though cause that would suck for Fez but what else can i do? He has ruined almost $1,000 worth of bedding, and beds, in two differnt rooms. Its not everyday, its random, help!!!!!
I know this might sound horrible but I am almost entertaining the idea of finding him a new home. Nothing we have done has worked, the litterbox is clean, its almost like he is just to "lazy" sometimes to get up and use the box. I am seriously starting to regret ever getting him and just want him out sometimes. But of course i wont do that, but its sooo tempting, im really starting to hate him. I feel bad for saying that, but geez.
i am one to rub the nose in it. it might seem mean but it works!! i have found that after a few times of just getting down right nasty about pooping inside is the ticket. i make sure to drive home the point that it is so not cool lol. i wish u lots of luck cause i know u love him.
Well I wish I had some advise for you. But honestly I have never heard of a cat that won't use the litterbox. Does the litterbox have a top on it with a little door on it? I was thinking maybe its a privacy issue. What room of the house it the litter box in? Is there a particular room and area where he seems to prefer to go to?
Rebel...the litterbox does have a cover, both of them do, we have two of them. It doesnt seem to matter where the boxes are cause he does it no matter where they are. He does seem to enjoy the guest room, but we had a box in there before and he still went to the bathroom on my bed.Im so frustrated!
I feel sorry for you! I don't know what I would do if my cats did that! I guess I have just got lucky with my 2 boys because they have never, ever done that! Just an occasional hairball coughed up, or a couple times one of them threw up on basement floor. But that is linoleum. I would just keep doing searches until you find a good suggestion that would work for you! Good luck with that though.
We use to live in apartment and never had any trouble with our cats doing that.....had never even heard of it. When we moved to a house, my cat started "going" in the shower and bath tub. I was irate about this. We'd catch her in there and turn the water on to try to let her know that she wasn't supposed to go there but it didn't work. We put aluminum foil in the bottoms of your tubs so that when she landed on it she would hear it and get scared.....she found ways around it. She wouldn't do it all of the time, just sparatic...like you said.
I had the litter box in one of the bathrooms and thought that may be the problem. Even though I kept it clean (cuz cats like clean), I thought she may be smelling the soapy residue on the tub and thinking "hey, thats even cleaner!".
I moved the litterbox to another room. Same thing. I moved it again.....same thing. I put it in the other bathroom and she got a little better, but she'd still do it at least once or twince a week. We shut the door on the first bathroom at all times and she actually went in the floor a few times....right in front of the door!
The only thing remotely close to ever getting it to work was to keep every door shut on every room we didn't want her to go in. Well, we didn't want her to 'go' in any of them, but you know what I mean. We always kept ALL bathroom and bedroom doors shut. It is a hassle with kids...and sometimes you will have slip ups.....but we tried everything. We were at a dismay because she had never done this before.
We moved again back in June and guess what? She hasn't done it once. The litter box is in the bathroom....all doors stay open.....and not once has she went anywhere other than the litterbox. Strange.....but its a cat.....lol.
Now, the difference in me and you is that I could clean up my floors or the tub........mine wasn't ruining household items. I totally agree that if I couldn't get the behavior to stop, I'd have to re-home the cat. As with my situation.......a new home may be exactly what the cat needs.
Napster is NOT fond of other cats....she doesn't even like looking in the mirror. There were 5 cats living in the house we moved into before we moved there. I think she smelled them and didn't like it. The house we live in now has never had inside pets......and she stopped doing it.
Honestly, Fez may be smelling other animals and is trying to mark his spot (even with fecal matter).......which is why another home may be best for you and him both.
I hope you don't feel that you'd ever be judged for having to rehome a pet if its necessary. Sometimes certain pets just need a certain environment. He may need to run a one-animal household...lol
Thanks for all the links! Ansy you made me feel better, thank you! It will be really sad if i have to rehome him cause he was so sick and near death when i got him and i nursed him back to helath. He is kind of a scared cat but has grown use to us and loves when we pet him. It would be sad and hopefully that wont have to happen, I know my boyfriend would be really upset, I'll have to see how this week goes, if he pees on one more thing im gonna have to find him a new home, but I will be doing all I can to make sure he doesnt pee on something.
Oh and PD....thats a good idea about the crate, has anyone ever done that with a cat?
Only for a few days when they were babies. Other then that when my white cat Cujo got out, and got into a big fight with a neighbors cat. He had a cone, a drainage tube and stitches too! The vet told me that would be best and I put him in a large kennel with a small litterbox while I was not home! { And no , I dont let my cats out-he was a young explorer then who has since learned he has no business being outside!} He has Never left since! I definatly would give a bigger crate a try! With a box in it too!
One of mine used to pee on my bed when I would leave to run an errand ... ( maybe 4-6 hours gone) ... I got so mad.... I thought he was doing it to be spiteful.. and get me back for not taking him with me... But after figuring it out... >> I found out that because of his past abuse ... he has a damaged bladder... gets on my bed for comfort ... cries ... gets worked up and has an accident.... after I found out what was happening and why... we worked on ways to help his bladder control... and separation anxiety. Things are way better now…
There for awhile I was thinking he would look so cute stuffed…. LoL
Cats can definitely be a puzzle to figure out at times. If Fez has been checked by the vet & a medical problem has been ruled out here are a couple of things I'd suggest.
1. Experiment with different types of litter. I have had cats in the past who have been real finicky about the type of litter. I would pick up a small bag of something completely different from what you are currently using & try it. There are many varieties to try. The cat I have now, when she was younger, absolutely refused to use the clumping variety - it had to be plain old-style clay litter. None of the fancy, new fangled types for her.
2. You can also try not having the top on the litter box.
3. It might also be whatever you are using to wash the litter box. Try another cleanser and see if that makes any difference.
4. I have also heard of some cats who won't share a litterbox with another cat. Maybe increase the # of boxes available.
I hope you can figure out a solution - til then I'd definitely keep all the bedroom doors closed.
I had the same problem with my black cat when he first came to us. He was around 7 months old and was always an out door cat (he was a stray) so he didn't know how to use a litter box. He was used to going in dirt. I started with 4 litterboxes and used dirt from outside in them. Then slowly started adding litter until it was all i used. I watched to see what boxes he used most and slowly took each one away until i just had the one he used mostly. I have never had a problem since. Good luck.
