Sad News

Well today I went to check on the hamsters, I saw the momma but no babies. They are well over 3 months old now and there almost her size. I looked everywhere hopeing they got out. Well when I looked in the house I saw half a body for the only light gray one and a lot of fur. In this process she bit me 3 times. Well I know ya'll will think i'm cruel but I let her go outside. If she hadn't bit me so many times I prolly would have kept her but at the point I was so pissed. So I will be going out to find another male. No more females.

That is so sad.  I'm sorry she wasn't nice.  What happened to the babies?  Do you know?

There was so much fur of all colors my only guess is that she eat them all. There was no way possible for them to get out. I hope maybe one or two got out but I don't think so. There was tan, black, gray and white fur. All colors from the babies and she had no bald spots at all.

What made me so sick was they were her size almost full grown. I was going to check them for sex and put them in different cages tomorrow. Well now all I have is the one male left who is in another cage by himself.

I can't believe she ate them!  Oh my!  I was hoping that they had gotten out and the cat had eaten them.  I didn't know a hamster would do something like that.

I had a hamster when I was younger.  I named HIM Rambo.  Rambo later turned out to be a SHE!

thats awful ! what happened , did the momma kill them and eat them? i have heard that they have been known to do that before. its too bad you couldnt have taken her back to the petstore. she will have a better chance there than running loose outside. i would go with males next time. i had two hampsters , a male and a female. the female was a biter. she got held alot too and still bit when she felt like it. the male, on the other hand, was extremely lovable. he never ever bit me or any of the kids. he was the much better pet of the two.he was a dark silver-gray teddy bear hampster. a little ball of fur and love.

See Dusty thats the problem, I didn't get them from a petstore, I got them from the flea market (I know I know).

My male is a lil love bug he's never bit anyone once. She bit a few times but nothing like she did today. She drew blood all 3 times. When I went to clean and bleach the cage I found blood everywhere. It was so gross

it sounds like she went on a killing rampage. she was probably still riled up is why she was biting you , and hard too if she was drawing blood. something got her dander up. maybe one of the cats were stalking the cage and she got upset over that. i would go with another male. they tend to be more calmer than the females.

Oh man, I'm sorry. I've seen that sort of thing before. My hampster as a kid never did that, but I had friends whose hampsters would. I even saw one do it first-hand at the petshop once. I wonder why they do that? I have never really understood it. Like Dusty was saying, I have heard it could have to do with stress.

My husband had a female rat that used to bite him all the time. He eventually had to sell her because of it as well. Those little boogers hurt when they bite! lol

Stormy, I am very sorry that you went through that.....getting bit and having to see the aftermath...but I have to say that Dusty's comment of "it sounds like she went on a killing rampage." coupled with the fact that you let her go makes me visualize a fugitive hamster on the loose.....armed and dangerous....lol

You can chew my ass for making a crack like that.  I just try to find humor in bad situations sometimes and its not always appropriate.  I know it must have been rough.....you were so excited when the little ones were born.

Jeez, you guys, it's a freakin' hampster. They have neither manners, nor morals, they are rodents.
They eat each other, yes.
Only way one can out do the other is to become like Stormy's Avatar, and defend itself.
I had a cat eat kittens, and, growing up-had rabbits eat their young.
Something to do with whether the animal has enough SPACE, and is comfortable, or is nervous by interference....They don't want you around, instinctivly...

I'm postive it wasn't my cat. She NEVER comes out of her room. As far as space, they were in a 3 story high cage with 3 houses. You guys might remember me posting pics of it calling it "Hamster Paradise".

Well either way whats done it done. I'm getting one more male to keep him company and thats it. Next might be a Gunia (sp) Pig. Other than that I think i'm sticking to dogs! LOL

LMAO @ Ansy!

i did see the pics of your hampster house. it looked more like a hampster condominium ! lol . i agree your best bet would be another male. i think the best rodent pet i ever had was my chinchilla, corky. he was so,cuddly, smart and comical. i wanted to get a prairie dog and even went to a class to learn all about them and how to care for them. a lady that came to the class brought her pet. he was in a little harness and he would climb up on her shoulder and peek over her shoulder at us.they are the cutest !  i was on the waiting list to get one ,but never heard back on it. maybe someday .......

My son brought home a single dwarf female. That turned into like 5, but she ate all but three, then that turned into another handful, and more vanished. It made David so sick he gave them away. He says "I am not interested in having a cannibal for a pet!"  I laughed at him til I cried. He is pretty dramatic about stuff, in a funny way. So, no more hamsters for us. lol

Uhk, rodents.
Yeah, Twink, That feral mama cat ate 3 babies, and left some feet in the cage.
All I wanted to do was get her to nurse her babes. Can't force motherhood, you know...

I would have felt differnt about it IF they weren't pretty much full grown. If she would have eaten them with they were younger I wouldn't have been so mad\sick. But, they were her size. They were older then my male and female when I brought them home. But, like I said what's done is done I can't go back and change things. We will be looking for a male this weekend, we aren't going to just buy the first one we see, we want one that is just like ours now, a lil love bug.
