Hyde is the first male dog i have ever had. When my girls got spayed they had to stay away from the park and such for two weeks. Before I got Hyde I was under the impression that when males get neutered that they recover alot quicker and are able to go the dog park and such after 3 days of quite. However the paper my vet gives to owners whos dogs just got neutered says 2 weeks.
What is everyones thoughts on this? I know that spays are more involved and the incision is in a spot that can get really dirty. Neuters are alot easier on the dogs, and i heard helaed quicker.
For example this one guy at the dog park has a Border Terier named Otter. When Otter got neutered his owner brought him to the dog park on the 4th day, he said his doctor ok'd it? so im confused. Thanks!
oh one more thing, im trying to keep Hyde quite, however he jumps on the couch before i can stop him, is jumping on the couch ok? Its not that high up or anything.
That's the problem with pups - they feel better and want to resume their full activity. You are right in that spaying is more involved than neutering but jumping and hard playing can interfere with healing. If one has a typically low-keyed pup who is quite satisfied going to the dog park and just mingling without being rough & tumble I think that would be OK. To be honest, I have never kept one of my neutered males quiet for 2 weeks (in multi-dog households it would be just about impossible unless a crate is used) but I always try to minimize their activity for at least a week especially when it comes to jumping & rough playing with another dog.
I know when the lab we had was neutered he was the same hyper dog the very next day. But Oscar took his neutering a little harder. I guess because he weighed 150 then.
Supposedly all jumping and running should be limited. But try and tell a pup that. I would say go with the two weeks, because its the stitches that they would worry about being ripped out.
i agree with puttin. if your vet says two weeks, then i would wait two weeks. give the stitches plenty of time to heal. he will be far less likely to develope complications later down the road. neutering is a fairly simple procedure, but anytime there is an incision made, its best to keep the wound clean . he will experience a much faster healing process.
