My 8 year old son and I read this tonight. It was about a boy getting a new kitten and his trip to the animal shelter. In a very simple, basic way, it touched on people getting tired of pets and dropping them off, people dumping pets, neutering your animals so they won't have babies, and the lifetime responsibility that they are. The boy in the story ends up choosing an older kitten instead of the babies, because they just had an instant attachment.
I was so happy to read this in a children's book and I strongly recommend it for parents of young children.
If education were teaching this to kids they would grow up being kinder not only to pets, but to people, also. Kids would then tell parents to get the cat nuetered, so that parents would not be irresponsible
