~ I want to continue to feed Harvey his dry food but i would like to incorporate raw meat into this dry food... Will Harvey gain any benefits of the raw diet from just having it as a supplement to his dry food or do they only gain the benfits of a 100% raw diet
~Also i can get minced Beef and lamb hearts, chicken livers easily (where i shop its pretty limited) .. is this o.k to rotate between these 3 foods ..is there any problems with him having mainly organ meats as an addtion or should he have more mince etc. for example mince 2 days mixed in then chicken livers mixed in over the next two days and lamb hearts the rest of the week
There are a ton of people that feed RAW but thats all they feed. I know there are some discussion groups on RAW feeding you may want to look into that.
I don't reccomend feeding raw especially to a dobie their systems are sensitive and it can cause problems. I cook the meats I feed mine and use steamed veggies and such using very little dry dog food if any and I have seen a huge improvement in their health. Their energy levels and coats benifit greatly. Many say that it is pointless to cook the meats as they don't get the full benifits of feeding as you would with raw. I disagree myself. I am anti raw because of the growth hormones and chemicles used in our meats today. Just to be clear on why I feel this way. The choice is entirely yours of course. While it is true that wild dogs eat raw meat domesticated dogs do not get the same benifits from our raw meat as wild dogs do when they hunt kill and eat their food. If you would like information on a cooked diet I would be happy to help you with that as that is how I feed. It sounds like a lot of work but really it is quite simple. As for the meats used I use chicken livers gizzards and hearts, beef and lamb hearts, I also use canned fish such as salmon and mackerl. You can also use hard or soft boiled eggs as a meat as well raw tends to strip the biotin in their system and it will give most dobies the poops. For veggies I use greanbeans, carrots, broccoli, califlower (all steamed) I use spinach occasionally but I found can spinach is easier on them then steamed fresh as they get gassy from the steamed fresh spinach. Canned pumpkin in small ammounts like a tablespoon or so and yogert (plain) as well as cottage cheese is good for them as well. They can eat some fruits but it is best to monitor the fruits you choose to see if they take them well. I use white rice and elbow pasta as a filler rather then kibble but I do use about 1/4 cup of quality kibble for each of the dobes.
I have sen a vast improvment in their health and attitude since feeding like this. But with my dogs I also add vitimins such as glucosimine and condroitin and fish oil to help keep their bones joints and coat healthy. Rusty my male used to get UT infections a lot until I changed his dies and I have not had one problem with him in several months since I changed his diet over. And Rambo is doing better then ever considering his hip displasia and he needs no pain medication anymore. He runs and can jump and get up and down off of the couches and beds with ease.

Yeah there is the barf diet (bones and raw foods) diet, and there is the all meat diet. I think that just as a suppliment it would be alright. I want to show you a site about all meat feeding, the rules are very simple. expensive but simple. I think if it were just all inards all the time it may be overload, but in company with kibble it would be alright. They benifit alot from the knawing on the bones for their teeth, Don't be surprised if he just swollows the hearts no chewing.
I feed my dogs many, many different things. However, they do always get the same kibble. I used to feed Nutro Ultra but when I added in some Merrick's canned food and saw how wonderful it was I decided to switch to Merrick's kibble also. Merricks kibble is slightly cheaper in my area than Ultra but not enough to matter. I am seeing no differences in the dogs going from Ultra to Merrick's so I don't know what I'll do with that yet.
Now to the raw. I feed my dogs some raw about twice a week along with their kibble. I have a lab/dobe mix (Tucker) and it does give him the poops although not significantly and not enough to matter. I do the Bravo pre-packaged raw. It already has the bones and vegetables mixed in. I will continue to do this forever, at least for Tucker. Tucker was my sickly puppy. He was always sick to his stomach, he had the runs, he was puking, we were in and out of the vet at least once a week. He also couldn't handle medicine. When I first adopted him he was riddled with worms. Any kind you can think of. He had them so bad they thought he had parvo. It took us forever to get rid of them because he couldn't keep the meds. down. Since I have been giving them raw twice a week with whatever else they may be having the rest of the week (they have something different every night along with their kibble) I haven't had any more problems with him. He's just as healthy as everybody else now. Its actually been a miracle in my house. The dogs look great, they coats are shiny and beautiful, their teeth look wonderful, my two old dogs, one who has arthrtis in her hips really bad, are doing wonderfully on it and the arthritis has actually eased a bit.
With that being said, raw is not for every dog. My dogs do wonderful and have less health problems but that doesn't mean yours will. I have heard horror stories about raw and I have heard successes. I made the decision based on what I had heard and when I did start feeding it to them I started out giving them bits at a time, such as for a treat, and slowly eased it to their meal.
It is extremely expensive. If I did decide to take my dogs off of it because of money reasons, which I won't because of its benefits for them, I would have an extremely hard time. They absolutely love it. Just be sure its something you're willing to do and you have the means to do it. I go every week and buy it from the store the day it comes off of the truck so I know its fresh. Toby gets 2, 5 pd. rolls a week. The 5 pd. rolls are 10.00 a piece. Tucker and Zoe share a 5 lb. roll, and Mikey, Lucy, and Daisy share a 5 lb. roll. So thats 60.00 a week I spend on the raw. Just to give you an idea. I know you only have 1 to feed so it won't be near as much but you get the idea.

Actually raw can be cheap if you know where to buy it. We have local butcher or meat processing places here and I could probably feed Oscar for 40 dollars a month. So you might want to check out slaughter houses.
I won't feed raw meat, especially chicken because i worry about things like saliminilla (sp?) and things like that. JMO Mine get dry food and veggies with water.
Wow, Zoe, you impress me with your efforts. I am a lousy dog owner next to you...and could never be a mom...You just rock! I am content to buy a relatively pricey, well considered kibble...and suppliment it with my leftovers. My dogs are spoiled enough that they puke on white bread or anything that I would not eat...so we just share.
Kitty you are a wonderful dog owner. I have learned many things from you. I live for my kids and my dogs and I don't have anything else. Without them I would just be a big lump and might as well not exist. Well, my husbands okay too.

i am with you oasis. no raw here. and yes there is a possibility of bacteria in the raw feeding. they get their kibble and merricks canned, but they also get hamburger gravy over rice, salsbury steak and other foods that we have and share with them. all cooked foods. and they also are solidly built and have shiny coats.
Dogs have a much shorter, quicker digestive tract than ours so while it is possible for a dog to get a bacteria from raw meat its highly unlikely and I have never known any dog who is given raw meat to get sick from a bacteria from the meat.

Sometimes I give Oscar raw chicken. He has never gotten sick from it. But he does love it. He will sit right by my side while I am cutting up a chicken because he knows he will get a good portion of it.
i guess its for some, but not me . i just cant stomach anything raw. its just gross to me. especially knowing that the barf diet is whole animals ground up. eeeewwwwwwww
thanks all for taking the time to reply ~ i think im gonna slowly introduce cooked oragan meats just a couple of times a week added to his biscuit and see how he gets on with them ..he stomach can be alittle iffy at times so i'll keep an eye on it. he has the odd little cube of raw steak or a small amount of mince whilst im cooking tea and he loves it ~ Michale on the other hand hates the thought of him eating anything raw ..he thinks Harveys gonna turn into some blood thirsty savage hound
I am ao with you dusty and oasis. When they hunt and kill their food to eat it it is wild like they are and the animals are not fed or injected with growth hormones or given all kinds of medications. They are also not eating off pastures that have pesticides sprayed on them and when I saw how chickens are produced and processed I definatly decided they would NOT be eating raw meats. If you have the time and lifestyle that affords you fresh grown veggies without pesticides and meats that are naturally grown pasture raised then I would say give it a try.

The BRAVO meet that I feed is all organic. It has no pesticides and the animals are free range with no growth horomones and such. I wouldn't just go to my butcher and buy them raw and feed it. I do buy them meat from the butcher but I cook that first.
