How did you choose?

Well, this question is more for the people who have purebreds, but how did you choose the breed that you have? Husband and I are battling back and forth between getting a chow puppy or getting a golden puppy. Those are the only two breeds that we really cannot decide on. Koda is both and we love both breeds. We are so in love with chows and we even love the aloof temperment that so many people dislike about them. Chows are one of my absolute favorite breeds, but so are goldens, when ever we have gotten a dog from the shelter, with the exception of our Samoyed, and our poms(not from shelter though), we have always had dogs mixed with one or the other or both of the golden and chow. But we really want to get a pup from a good breeder but we only want one. How did some of you decide which breed you wanted??

And how am I supposed to choose between these?.......

The way I chose a Dane puppy was just reading their temperments and such. Plus when I went and saw all the Danes at the breeders house I was in love. But a Great Dane just seemed to fit our family perfectly. I really don't know anything on chows though but I know the goldens I have been around have been very hyper. But I have to say..that chow pup is too cute!!

OMG that chows puppys face is adorable

I chose Harvey as I had always loved Dobermans .The first one i met chased me and my brother up the drive where we were playing ~ we were so scared as they seemed Giants to us as we were only little.. but It wasnt until my mum complained to the owner and he invited us all around to  his home to show my mum that his Dobie was not viscious ..and as i sat there with this beautifull dog holding its huge feet in my hands i totally fell in love ~ sounds really cheesy and corny but its true lol

Well i wanted one for ages and that memory stuck in my mind..i had read up lots on there temperament and conditions they have etc and spoke to people who owned one and went through as much info as possible as it was a decision that should not be taken lightly (as with any dog) ..well i spoke about it with michael and we decided to go through with it and get the dog of my dreams (michael fell in love with him later lol) and the rest is history

But see most of you have already had one favorite breed, we have two! lol I have done all the research on both breeds that I could possibly do since I wanted to know any health problems Koda could have since he has both breeds in him. Koda has the sweet golden personality and he looks like on too, minus the blue tongue and so part of me is leaning towards the chow. Also, goldens are so overbred that I am very leary of getting one. Chows are not real common in our area, Chow mixes are but you don't see a whole lot of purebred chows around.

One other thing that is making me lean towards the chow is my dog training club has never had a chow that has went on to competition obedience training(most chows are too stubborn for that! lol) I enjoy training very much, Koda starts advanced Novice tomorrow and then begins beginner competion training. I would love to be the first person to get a chow in competition through my dog training club. They have a ton of goldens go through.

I just can't decide though. Luckily, I do not have a time limit to make this decision. I have alot more discussing to do because we both think both breeds will do great with our lifestyle. Oh, this is so hard! lol (This is the best hardest decision ever!)

Over the years I have had mostly mixed breeds with the exception of the 2 Great Danes I had. I loved the danes - size, temperment, personality, etc. If they had a longer lifespan I am sure there would still be a dane in my house. The last dog I had before I got Farley was a samoyed/collie mix. Rufus was a real sweetheart but the shedding was horrendous. After we lost him to cancer I decided I wanted large breed but preferably one that did not shed. It was important that whatever dog I got had to be good with kids as I had a 3 yo grandson who visited alot. After doing tons of research I decided that a standard poodle would be a perfect addition. Farley made such a great impression that 2 years later we got Chloe.

As far as you making a choice between a chow & a golden, only you can decide what will fit in best with your lifestyle. I think it might be easier finding a reputable golden breeder than a chow breeder. Personally I would choose a golden over a chow as I think they are a better all-around breed for my lifestyle. I wouldn't mind the challenge I would face doing obed. training with a Chow but goldens with their exhuberant personalties can be just as much of a challenge - there are a couple in class that really make me work for my money because they are just soooooo happy. I just like a golden's personality better. I also think a golden is much better suited for an out-and-about lifestyle and much more capable of being comfortable around strange people and dogs.

I chose by size, temperment, activity level, shedding, etc.

With Lola, Hubby wanted an english bulldog the size of an american bulldog (height wise) I told him he could have Lola instead.   Plus we liked the idea that not very many have frenchies, but quite a few people have english bullies.

With Tiki, I wanted to get a Chow.  But we were supposed to go to California where we would have had to carry insurance on her in case she bit anyone, so we decided to go with a husky.   A realitively common dog, especially in Maryland  and the Northeast    but not so common that if a burgler were to break in our home (one that is unknowledgeable about dogs) they'd look at her size (when she grows up) and her face and go the other way.    Plus I wouldn't have to worry about people b*t*hing about a chow personality and that they're mean dogs or whatever.  We'll wait till we buy a home

lil exorcist,

I go through that all the time with people about how aggressive chows are. To be 100% honest with you I have never met a truly aggressive one. I have met scared ones and ones not socialized too well. But I have never met one that was just truly mean. Chows have a special temperment that requires specific training and socializing, it is part of what I love about them. They are not too stupid to do what you want they are just to smart to humiliate themselves to do it. :)

Oasis,

I love Chows and I know that if I was offered a puppy right now I probably wouldn't be able to say no but I cannot resist goldens either. I have a feeling I am leaning towards the chow but I also want hubby to help make the decision. He likes them both too but he is the type where either will be cool. Which doesn't help me decide! lol

Unfortunately, i have never met a nice chow..........lol  I have been bit and so has my mom and sister.  All three different chows.  I am not saying all chows are aggressive but i have just never had good experiences with them.

well with me, we didn't chose either of our breeds of dogs.  sandy was given to us because friends of my dads didnt want to puppies.  and we rescued tiny from family friends because they weren't taking care of her properly.  but if i were to choose a breed of dog, after the research that i have done, i would be stuck between a golden retriever, or a min pin...i know thats quite a size difference...but meh! lol.  but it sounds to me like you've already made your decision and that you're leaning more towards the chow! good luck...and have fun deciding!
