Hubby and i were driving down the road today and all of a sudden i see an animal sitting on the side of the road. As i pass it, i realize it is a hawk and it is sitting with it's legs out in front of it watching the cars go by. I quickly turned around and went back to where i saw it and as i stopped on the opposite side of the road, i see that he is attempting to cross the busy road. I jog up to him and shoo him back and noticed that he had a badly broken wing and foot. Hubby grabbed my leather work gloves and i put them on to grab the hawk. Another man stops and helps and brings over a towel to wrap the hawk in and as soon as i pick it up to put it on the towl, it sinks it talons from it's good foot right into hubby's fingers....OUCH! Man, they bled. I felt soooo bad. Anyway, we then take the hawk to a wildlife rescue i know of and she looks it over and sees that the injuries are old and he had a BAD infection and was not going to servive so she will put it peacefully down. At least we tried and poor hubby had to go to the DR. and get a tetnus! What a day.
Once, in the restuarant's bathroom, a good customer was being helpful, and smooshed down the overfull trash can with her foot. As she walked away, she had unknown to her, a 2 foot long piece of toilet paper trailing from her shoe. I caught her and pointed down at her unwelcome banner. She said "You know, my dad taught me that no good deed goes unpunished"... Guess you learned that today. I still think it is good to try. Poor bird, I like hawks...
its a shame it didnt survive..but atleast you gave it your best shot~ its a good thing that you did pick it up even though it did get put to sleep~atleast it suffered no more.
You stopped and cared enough to .... you tried and made the effort... and even in the end because he/she was sick ... you at least helped send it off in peace ... with out cars Zooming by... or getting eaten.... so you did a great thing.... you and hubby... ( sorry hubbies finger got hurt... , hope it's ok)
I agree, you did a great thing, the hawk probably wasn't going to make it anyway, not with an infection and also being on the side of the road with traffic and god knows what else. You helped that poor bird make his final day a peaceful one. He could have, and probably would have dies a slow painful death but you helped that not happen. That is so unselfish and great. You should be happy. Of course, it would have been better if he could have been saved but if he couldn't that is the next best thing. We practice that rule with our pets, do not let them suffer and that is what you did to this wonderful creature. I am proud of you, most people wouldn't have stopped at all. Thank you for helping that birds last day be the best it could be.
Also, tell your hubby that his wound is just going to be his reminder of the great deed he did. Don't think of it as punishment, think of it as a memory. :)
hawks are beautiful birds, but they do have powerful talons. sorry that your hubby was injured, but grateful that you were able to help. i tried to catch a feril cat one time and he bit holes all up and down my arms and legs and i too had to go in and get the wounds treated and a tetanus shot. the next day when i let it out the kennel , he busted through the garage window and was gone. but at least i tried and like you thats all you can do. if you hadnt of stopped he probably would have been hit and suffered a painful death. so many people wouldnt have even cared am glad to know that there are people that do. good job !
