I heard on the radio this morning about a canine flu that is very contagious and can lead to death. Is this only in the NY area or is everybody freaking out about it? One of my neighbors now won't let her puppy out at all. she bought wee wee pads. The dog is going nuts. I'm keeping my dogs away from parks, but they can run around my yard. anyone have some real info that i can give to my neighbor before her dog goes stir crazy?
Thats only the second time I have heard of that. The first was at the U of Minnesota when I was in line behind another woman who asked the Vet Pharmacy guy if he knew of any new cases. He said no, and he thought it wasnt here in the midwest, so she shouldnt worry. Thats all he said though. Thats all I have heard about it.
Ok scratch that. While I was online with TV going in background. It was a topstory on the news. The closest to me its been seen in is Wisconsin. I hope it dosnt come here. It is mostly been seen in Greyhounds is what the news said. Where do you live Sarah, in the New York area?
It is actaully here in Florida where most of the breakout has accured. When the grayhounds traveled to race they spread it. It's here in Tampa but my dogs do not go anywhere really and when they do there usually isn't any other dogs around. I'll be keeping Storm and Wiggles at home for awhile and not taking them to the track or the races til this is all cleared up.
I'm in Westchester (south eastern ny about 10 miles outside of nyc). It's a pretty big deal here. It is supposed to start out like kennel cough and get worse from there.
I'm betting it is a corona virus [there are 40 kinds...known]. Do the intra-nasel bordatella vaccine 2 weeks before kenneling or exposure to dogs in a park or show, and be sure Corona is inc. in your vaccines. Other than that, the stuff goes through them real quick, and you have to watch that the dog does not get cold, or hot, it seems to deregulate their temp. A lot of folk are not expecting the dog to become as cold as a corpse, and shock sets in, and they die from that. Monitor their temp[I touch their forehead, just like a child] and act accordingly. Use slippery elm bark if they have gut pain and barfing. If the diahreah is bloody use aloe vera. If either is the case, give pedialyte instead of water[unflavored].
I just called several vets in my area to check and we haven't had any cases here yet. That makes me feel a lot better. I'm with Kitty though and I'm betting its some type of corona virus. There are just so many known strains of that virus that I bet there are more. My dogs have all been recently vaccinated and I'm going to check in every couple of days with the vets around me to make sure none have been reported. I'm also going to keep my dogs close to home and no daycare.
