Sudden increase of Python reports

Sorry if this has already been posted. I have been watching the news from S. Fl. and the 3rd. time in what a week there have been reports of pythons (particularly burmese) attacked and/killing animals/pets. And as of a reprt tonight 1 went after a man. And being a reptile owner and lover this is a very saddening moment.

This first recent case I am sure we have all heard about was the python vs. alligator. And from what I saw that one ended as a draw.

Second one involved a cat. This one I am nor sure they can really prove that the snake ate this cat. I hate to say that but that is how I feel. The cat went missing for several days. Then the python was found, I assume on the property, so they call A/C and they x-ray the snake and see that there is a cat in there. Now in my opinion that could be any cat. But that is not my point here. This snake may loose its life because of its stupid owners.

The last one involoving the man I have no details on yet. But I will at 10 when they air the story.

Now the reason for the post. Is this stupid owners. That is why these snakes get out in the wild. As far as my understanding is that Burmese Pythons are not native to this country but they are sold like crazy in Pet Stores to people that show up with money but no knowledge of the snake that they are buying. I know I NE FL..they are also sold at flea markets like crazy too.People see this cute little babies and oh they gotta have one. SO they do get this animal with little understanding of the size that these animals can grow to. SO when they get to big or eat more food then they thought. They get dumped in the wild...Thinking its a snake it can survive. I some cases yes they can and some poeple may never know they are there. But as the recent cases have shown they can also take advantage of peoples pets and any other animal it can catch. I mean I household cat or small dog does not stand a chance against a 12+ python.

And whats even more aggravating is that there are rescues that specailize in reptiles. I know that there is a great one in Atlanta Grare. They do a wonderful job not just with adoption, but also with educating the public about reptiles. I know before I got Helmet ,my turtle, they had approved me for an adoption. But I live to far away to take the little guy in.

I guess I am done rambling but this burns me. There are many, many more reptiles that seem to get dumped but this one really sticks in my mind.

Edited to add: The new report was an African ROck Python. It was found in a turkey pen. And they said this one was taken to a zoo.

I have been following this as well. From what I gather they are going to see what happens in nature right now. They are going to see if the alligators will kill off the pythons. They say that it will take at the least a 10 foot gator to kill a full grown python. In the mean time these pythons are killing the gators. Now I am a snake lover but they are not native to this country and the gators are. The gators were recently taken off the endagered species list. If these pythons stay in the wild here they think that they could kill so many that they will have to be placed back on. Now in order to too stop this from happening they have to get rid of the pythons. How they plan on dong this is still uncertain.


I agree that this is casued my un educated snake owners. It's their fault that this is happening. When I had to give my python up I didn't just let her go, I found her a great home! Snakes are just like dogs, you can't just buy on and expect it to stay a cute little puppy, they grow up to be monsters especially in this case.


I'm really not sure how to look at this. Being a Floridan the gators were here first and Florida is known for it's gator population, IF this problem persists we will be known for our Python population. Personally I think it should stay the way it has been for years! Now I do not think that they should kill the pythons, catch them and home them or try and give them to a zoo or something of that nature. Killing them I do not think is the answer.

yep people are defiantly un-educated.. they are pretty cheap to buy and people think they are 'cool' and pay no attention to the size they could reach i guess people think they will slither around and eat mice an thats all they will eat..do they not realise where these snakes are from..in their native land they are feared as they will and have eaten children and livestock..i certainly would not want to come face 2 face with one.


i have seen one case here when someone decided to let there python free onto a housing estate ..it was caught but not until it had made a meal of someones poor cat
