So, my husband and I are getting extremely frustrated with Tiki because it seems she's doing more than the average chewing for a puppy. She doesn't chew when we're in the room, she chooses to wait till we're out of the room and any woodwork or magazines are fair game. We've tried the bitter apple spray, doesn't work. We're going to try to start working with kenneling her at night again....Cross your fingers and hope it works. But in talking with a Sibe. Husky Rescue gal today she said to try getting a basket muzzle for her. So far I'm having trouble finding one. Since she's still a puppy she's in kind of the awkward stage, the top of her nose length is 3 1/2", from nose to bottom jaw is 5" and the circumference is 9. I have to try to find some solutions, I can kennel her when I'm at work and she's fine, no complaint from the neighbors, but at night she yips (which we're going to work with her on) and when we leave to go to the bathroom everything gets torn up. I dont want to have to rehome her, but I fear that will be the next option if I can't find this muzzle and curb this habit. I started crying today because initally hubby and I decided that is what we were going to do. I love my dog, and want to make sure I exhaust every possible avenue before accepting the fact that she might have to get rehomed. Does anyone know where I might be able to find the wire muzzle for her (the rescue gal recommended that because then she'll have a harder time getting it off and will still be able to drink and what not)
I personally do not think that a muzzle is the right thing. If you really want to have you tried eBay or PetSmart?
They do make Pepper spray it's just like the bitter apple but it's pepper. All of mine loved the bitter apple but hated the pepper kind so i've always found that to work best.
If your going to try and crate her at night again, I would put the crate in your bedroon next to your bed if it's not already there. That way she doesn't feel as though you abannded her and she will still have the feeling of being next to you. If it's the metal wire crate try covering half of it with a blanket keeping the front open or the side which ever will allow her to see you.
My mothers dog loki did the samething before he went with my uncle. My uncle couldn't take it either so he went to a specialist for dog behavor and he said that there might be something with his teeth.
If you want the muzzle though i know canine commisary carrys them. I don't really think petsmart sells them unless its from online.
its so hard to decide what to do as tiki is still at the teething stage.
Harvey has now passed the teething stage but has taken a liking to my low wooden ornamental fence..it costs a fortune because i have to buy it by the metre length but he will insist on chewing on it. I have tried everything from liberally covering it in hot mustard ..he seemed to love it and licked it all off ..maybe tiki hates mustard? but then again im not sure what damage if any it would do to your furniture... i wouldn't like to muzzle tiki as i think it is not dealing with the problem (although different people give different advice :))
you say tiki does it when you are not there~ the only thing i can i can suggest its doing some stealth work lol..maybe try and view her from an area where she cant see you but you can see her and yell each time she reaches out to chew breaking her concentration.. The other thing i have seen done on a prgramme (called Its Me Or The Dog) with a husky is using a siren ..which emmits and unplesant sounding frequency at the press of a button to the dog to break its concentration ..it worked a treat ...the one thing they said though is make sure the dog cannot see you press the button..its gotta be your secret!
Dogs chew. The only thing you can do is keep them away from things to chew, when you are not eyes on, in arm's reach. I keep my dogs in giant $100. kennels in the house. They have toys to mess with in there and a water bottle. They are not given the run of the house. There is no destruction in the house. My back yard generally looks like a cyclone hit it, that is how they would have the house look, also. See "Extra-Large Classic Cage (28" x 48" x 35" H)" http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod_Display.cfm?pcatid=540&inm=1&N=2001+113495+113564 I think they are cheaper from the catalog, over the phone. They are open 24/7. Shipping is $10.
