worried mom

Hyde's been throwing up his meals, for about 3 days. I took him to work with me yesterday to keep an eye on him and to ask the doctors advice. She said to fast him for 24 hours, which I did and he didnt throw up in that time. So I just fed him breakfast, 10 minutes later he threw it all up. He is acting normal, playing, running around, pooping, peeing, drinking water and he definitly shows an interest in food. If it wasnt for the throwing up his meals you would never know something was wrong.

He is still a puppy so im worried about him not getting what he needs from his food since it doesnt stay in his stomach long. What could cause this? Yesterday morning when he threw up, there was some bullystick in there. Could it be an obstruction? Would he still be pooping if it was?

Im so frustrated cause the one thing that happens with my dogs a lot is throwing up. However there is never any cause, nothing new intorduced, no new foods and no new bones, just everything i normally give them. I just dont understand. Im a good mom, I love my babies, im very protective over them, I make sure they dont eat anything they shouldnt, so why does this happen?

When I told Jason this morning that Hyde threw up his breakfast agian he told me Winnie threw up a little lastnight too!!!! WTF!!! There is nothing in the yard that would make them throw up, ive kept the cat room door closed for the last 2 weeks to prevent them from eating poop, they havnt gotten into trash and I have stopped giving treats. The food they are on is Merrick's and they have been on that for about 6 months with no problems for the first 5. This last month seems to be the one where they are throwing up. None have thrown up as much as Hyde though. Ive also been giving them a piece of wheat bread after every meal. This works with Syd and makes her not throw up however its not working with Hyde. Could the bread be causing them to throw up? It seems to have started around the time I started giving them all bread after dinner. I also use to feed them merricks dry and wet and they didnt have a problem. Last week I stopped giving the wet, but i dont see how that could make him vomit, i would think the canned would make him vommit more? Im not sure.

Im so confused, I need to figure out whats causing this. Maybe I should switch their food? Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Well because you are concerned about some of the changes you made, I would try reversing those. Try giving them mixed wet and dry again and see how they do. If that doesn't help, try eliminating the bread, it is possible they have an allergy to the bread.
Something else to try is hand feeding them, one kibble at a time and only a little bit at a time, a few times a day.

I'm sure you know that what works for one won't always work for the rest.

Now, is there anything going on in your household where they could be seeing you under stress.  Dogs sence these things and it can put them on edge too.   I'm just grasping straws, giving you things to pull from.  Jason is not yelling at them or you or anything is he.

Thanks guys!

I tired hand feeding him yesterday, and he threw up after a couple bites, there was a lot of grass in it cause he had just gone outside, im gonna try once more this morning. Poor thing hasnt eaten or kept anything down for 3-4 days. I made him an appointment today, so hopefully we will figure out what is wrong.

Lastnight he kept asking to go outside more then normal, and I didnt see him poop yesterday, but that doesnt mean he didnt, but im gonna watch him this morning before I bring him in, I'd like to bring in a poop sample but he hasnt eaten for a while so he doesnt have to go.

Also something weird I was thinking about, when i had him with me at work and i was fasting him. I went to check on him and Lana and brought them each an Iams biscuit. Without thinking I gave it to Hyde, and now that im thinking about it he did NOT throw up after eating that biscuit. Weird.

Anyway if he doesnt have a blockage and it is something he ate that made this happen, i think im gonna switch his food, cause he only throws up his food.

But Hyde has been on this food since I got him, can a dog develop a reaction to a food after being on it for 5 months? Thanks agian! I'll let you all know what happens.

Poor Hyde is looking skinny, im worried. :(

Have you checked the expiration date on the food too.

I have to go outside with Lilly, she likes to eat grass too. If I left her out, thats all she would do.  She will trhow up the undigested grass (haystacks as I call them) about once a month.

Feed them twice a day, in their crates, measured amounts.
I give 1/2 slice of whole grain pita in the morning, and less than one qt. dry kibble in the evening.
It sounds like they are being given too much food. Leave it dry, if you can. Don't give greasy things.

I also am feeding puppy nature's recipe, and puppy [pink bag formula] authority from pet smart, or puppy nutro natural choice.
Puppy is richer, meatier, does not need stuff added to make it edible.
Of those 3, authority is the brand I do not trust, although it is labeled almost the same as nature's recipe. It is real cheap, though[$20, for #40lbs.]

RE: worried mom(UPDATE)

Well Hyde had his appt. yesterday. They took x rays of his stomach and throat, there where no obstructions. The doctor gave me some anti vomitting meds. So far he has kept his food down, but the poor guy must be starved, he tries to eat so fast now, that I have to hand feed him till he learns to eat slowly agian.

This morning Sydney threw up ALOT of bile. She was with me and Hyde all day yesterday at work and she was with me all night. She didnt eat anything she wasnt suppose to, maybe something just didnt agree with her? Im not sure, this was before she even had breakfast. So Im gonna fast her today and see what happens.I usually give Syd a piece of bread an hour after each meal, but I forgot lastnight, so i wonder if thats why she threw up?

The food is good I checked the date. They eat 2 times a day everyday only a cup each. Except since Hyde is a puppy still he eats 3 times a day,and i was actually wondering when to switch him to 2 times a day? Anyone know?

Thanks!

RE: worried mom

How old is he now?  At 6 months you can start 2 feedings a day.  Just split the mid afternoon meal and give half of that with morning meal and the other half with the evening meal. I hope this is something that is an easy fix, Syd. Does your sister know about Hyde at all?

Thanks. Yes my sister does know about Hyde and boy she wants him bad. She just isnt ready for him yet. She works carzy hours so she doesnt have enough time right now, however her schedule is changing soon so then she will be ready. I still have more training to do with him, my sister knows nothing about dogs so I told her I would have him trained when he did go to her, then she would just have to reinforce everything when he gets there. Im secretly hoping she will move back here, it will be hard to let go of Hyde.

He is also so attached to me its crazy, ive never seen a dog get so attached to a human. He always comes when I call him but he wont leave my side to go to Jason when he calls him. I have to work on that.

Hyde is 6 months now so I guess I will switch him to 2 meals a day now, that will be easier for me, yay!

Here's a hint to try to get Hyde to slow down his eating.  Either get a length of chain or a couple of decent sized rocks and put them in with his food - that way he will need to nose his food around to be able to eat it and won't be able to just gobble it up.

I had one dog who used to throw up bile first thing in the AM like Sydney did.  What resolved that problem was feeding a small portion of the kibble late at night - it helped reduce the amount of stomach acid in an empty belly which was apparently causing the problem.

Thats what I have heard other poodle owners say too Denise.  Just a snack before bedtime to give the acids something to work on. Poodles get very attatched to their owners and Hyde has probably taken more so of the poodle attitude about that.  But he can change over easily once with your sister.  Has she seen him?

Awwww, poor Hyde! I hope you figure out what is causing it. I was going to maybe suggest a lung infection like pneumonia (that happened to our Golden when I was a kid, and he couldn't keep food down) but if they did x-rays, they would have noticed that. It sounds like he has a REALLY sensitive stomach. Have you tried a food for sensitive tummies?
