Last night I messed up and went to my dog training club and thought Koda was going to be taking his CGC test, well it turns out it is tonight, Anyway, they were having a trainers meeting and I had to wait there for hubby to come back and pick me up, Anyway, I asked them (there was about 15 different dog trainers there) about Chi-Ching, He does not seem to like my 5 year old. He is overall find with her but he doesn't like her to hold him(sitting down) and he starts freaking out and growls, BUT he will not do this with my 3 year old. Also, I had him taken to the groomers and although, overall he did fine, when he was in the cage that they put them in (wall crates basically) He wouldn't let them get him out, he kept nipping at them. So my trainers have set up a time on Friday that I am to take Chi-Ching in to a evaluator and have him tested. They will test him like you would see on animal planet with shelter dogs, they will test for food aggression, babies, strangers, etc. They are doing this all for free. I am kind of anxious to see what they come up with, with the results of this, I am supposed to see the head trainer at my club and have her set up a training schedule for him to stop this behaviour IMMEDIATELY. I think this is a good idea, what do you think?? Chi-Ching is the most loving puppy ever but he has a few "quirks" to work out, Has anyone else here ever had their dogs evaluated? Do you think this is a good idea?
I think it is a good idea. He may be just uncomfortable with your daughter holding him or something. And with the groomers he may be scared. Not sure. But the test wouldn't hurt any. Plus its free.
I think it's a great idea. Know what he likes and doesn't like early that way you can grab it in the butt early. With your daughter she may have one time done something to him (IE step on him trip over him etc...) that hurt him and he may remember that. I'm sure he was scared at the groomers a bunch of people he didn't know bathing and brushing him. I know my dogs hate it when I take them in.
I'm sure he will do great. But you also have to keep in mind that a lot of Chow Chows fail these kind of tests.
It sounds like a great idea to me! More people, when faced with these same type of questions, should do as you are doing! It benefits not only them but the dog! And it is an excellent idea to face the problem right up front when the dog is still a pup and get a handle on any potential problems right away. Too many times people put it off as it's just being a pup and then realize when it is full grown that the situation is much more difficult to resolve.
