Last night was Chi-Chings "evaluation". It was a behaviourist/evaluator for the county shelter. She demonstrated with a few dogs(note: this is in a big ware house type of building and there was probably 30 people sitting there watching) Anyway, she get Chi-Ching on this really big leash and she starts running with him around the room, his tail was up and he was watching her but trotting along fine and then out of nowhere she did her "kid" test(also note, this woman was probably 5'5" and about 160+) and she starts squealling in this super high voice running towards Chi-Ching waving a toy in his face and then she started jumping towards him and still screaming and running around the room, it scared the crap out of him. He was at the end of the leash trying to run away. Her first words were, this dog should not be around kids(she said this knowing I have two already) Then she immediately sits on the floor and Chi-Ching is still scared and she starts "reeling" him in on the leash, well he was still petrified after she was screaming and so she gets him close to her and he starts getting vocal and kind of howling a bit, he was fighting pretty hard to get away, it was VERY obvious that he was terrified. And then what does she do? She reaches her arm OVER him and tries to grab him, he freaked and started growling at her.(the other evealuator there looked at the audience and says, now imagine this dog cornered) Did she stop? No. She kept reaching for him (as he as as far away as he can get because he is on the leash) She was poking him in the butt and then she would try and grab him, finally he tried to run around her but couldn't because of the leash and what does she do then, she reaches around her back and tries to grab him, she got her arm bit(she was wearing a sweater) He was growling most of the time trying to give her a warning, she just wouldn't let up. So in her words, he has a low tolerance level. He was also panting(we waited TWO hours for him to get tested in this hot warehouse type of building) but his panting was a sign of stress(ya think?) She looked at me and said if this dog was in the shelter it wouldn't make it out at all, she said it DEFINITELY should not be around kids and that we should have him put down!! Chi-Ching is not food aggressive he is just kind of pushy about his food and so I wanted him tested for that and she just looked at me and said, he has got bigger problems than food aggression. I am pretty upset because she now everyone there saw him as viscious "typical" chow. I take him to my daughters school and people pet him ALOT, he also visits other places. Actually some of the people at the dog training were petting him before the evaluation. I am very frustrated because I know he is a good puppy and my husband just says to ignore what she said because she did not consider that he was, first of all a chow, and second of all, he had been sitting there for two hours and was very anxious and she also didn't listen to a damn thing that I said.
Well, we will see what Tuesday brings as that is when he meets with the head trainer of my dog training club(a person a little more experienced with dogs and their breeds) Well, this "evaluation" was just a big waste of my time and it set back his socializing quite a bit because now he thinks everyone is going to act like that.
Wow!!! I am shocked that someone would act that way around a puppy. Of course he would be scared at some crazy weird woman. I wouldn't worry about what she said because her behavior would have scared any dog.
That is horrible that lady should never be able to do that to a dog. It looks like she doesn't know anything about dogs. Did they at least give him water or test with the food? I would have gone and gotten my dog in the middle of it and left. If they tried to stop me then I would kindly tell them that if they don't know how to test a dog properly then they are not testing my dog. But thats just me.
They didn't get to the rest of the test as I did leave. I wanted so badly to say something but I just wanted to get my puppy out of there and I felt if he felt me get too upset then he would get more upset.
ANY dog would be the same way when treated like that. geezz what did they expect. it sounds to me that the lady was already down on chows and had her mind made up before she even so called "tested" him. it sounds like he felt threatened, he was already in a strange invironment with strange people, who were pushing, pulling, poking and whatever else. i would strike back too if i were being treated that way ! poor little guy, he was being traumatized by a bully !
I would have been pissed too. God she is sitting there with a young pup thats already unsure of what to do. The one thing he was sure of was that he felt the need to protect himself. Any dog would have with some strange person. Lilly tried the scare snip-bite ,no contact on every dog that came near her at his age. She was very afraid. Strangers don't usually touch dogs like that. he just needs to be shown what he is supposed to do. The poor little boy.
WOW Is all I have to say! He's a Chow Chow!!! They act totally different from other breeds. Of course any dog put infront of her would be PST. I think they need to hire a new one to do the testing!! She's sounds like a total freaking moron! If anything take him somewhere were they know Chow Chows and have him tested, they will KNOW for a FACT if that is how a Chow would react or not.
Yea alot of people are like that with dobermans as well. If I meet a new freind and we are coming over to my house for something. I tell them to just don't mind my dog she won't hurt them and then they ask what kind of dog. SO i tell them doberman and most of the time they say then they will wait out in the car. I hate it when people treat dogs like that just because of what breed they are.
