A Tennessee high school principal summarily seized the school newspaper after articles on birth control and body art appeared. What do you think? Is it appropriate for students to write about birth control?
Oak Ridge High School Principal Becky Ervin and School Superintendent Tom Bailey are getting unwanted national and international attention after they tried to confiscate all 1,800 copies of the school's newspaper, The Oak Leaf.
Krystal Meyers, senior at the school, decided to write on different birth control methods and the availability of contraceptives after seeing three of her friends become pregnant.
The article includes quotes from a local physician as well as success rates of different forms of birth control. In Tennessee, teenagers may obtain contraceptives without parental consent.
Some students, including the paper's chief editor Brittany Thomas, protested the decision and have been seeking counsel from the Student Press Law Center and others.
They also hand-painted T-shirts that read: "Censorship Got Me Pregnant."
What do you think? Is it appropriate for students to write about birth control?
I personally see absolutely no problem, as long as it's done tastefully. The more knowledge teenagers get, the less unwanted pregnancies we'll have. I'm glad I am very knowledgable about sex and BC, my childhood friend is 15 now and she asks me questions all the time and if I'm not sure about something, I find the information and relay it to her...she didn't even know what ovulation was, how long it lasts, how BC pills work, etc...She now calls me "Dr.Wells". If you are a teenager, you do need to know about sex these days. No telling how many diseases you could prevent spreading if we were allowed to spread the word about BC in schools. My cousin is 11 and I can't imagine her getting pregnant anytime soon, her classes teach about sex and they get graded for it so why is the newspaper any different?
Having grown up in Knoxville and having family in Oak Ridge I can totally see this happening. This isn't a shock to me. You just don't talk about things like that in that area (I don't know about the rest of TN). I'm not saying it's at all right. Kids need to know about these things but that's just the way it is. I guess that's why when I was in 6th grade one of my 6th grade classmates got pregnant.

Ruins their lives, because of ignorance...what are we, in a new dark ages? I think they are more likely to protect themselves, than submit themselves to men, if they are fully informed. Sorry guys...the rules you make women suffer for...
That's just it. In that area of TN they are still in the dark ages. SHHHH! Don't talk about it and it won't happen they say. Confuses the hell out of me. I just don't understand why people there keep turning their eyes away like it's just not happening if they ignore it.

There were about 7 parents/future parents my senior year of high school(out of 272 classmates)...one had her baby about 2-3 days b4 graduation. That's just my class, there were freshmen, sophomores and juniors pregnant or already had kids. It's sad.
Whoever keeps it quiet and ignores it is an idiot. Why should it be something to be ashamed of? We are ALL a product of sex, period.
kids are smarter than we give them credit for. and some could give a lecture in front of a classroom on sex education. why try to hide things from the kids, trust me , THEY ALREADY KNOW ! its better to educate than hide things from them, forwarned is fore-armed . i am 50 years old and just found out what a "raincoat" is ! lol
i totaly aggree with heff. if every pregnancy was wanted, then we wouldnt have this debate. but the fact is that youth make mistakes, and like kitty said, through ignorance at times. my mom sat me down and gave me the whole lo-down on the subject in my teens, and while i hmphd and hawed and rolled my eyes, most of it stuck. i thank her for that now. i think parents are not taking a big enough roll in this issue, and that the parents and drs should come out against the school as well. part of my religeon says that bc is wrong, but i live in today's world and believe otherwise, and will continue to. that is my two cents.
In a human sexuality class I had, my teacher asked how many of our parents talked to us about sex. In a class of 30 MAYBE 5 people raised their hands. Of those five people, some still hadn't had sex and the others waited longer to have premarital sex. Now, if we were open about sex with our children, it would take away some of the shock and awe of having sex and they would wait. People are to embarassed to talk about sex and that I dont understand. On thing I did love about my class was it didn't focus on what diseases you get (we did talk about it though) our teacher more focused on how to do it right and please your partner.
My mother didn't talk to me about sex. My first time I was 15 and I didn't do it again until I was 17. That just shows how bad my first experiance was. And I had Kaitlyn at 19 and I have never regretted it. But I plan on talking to Kaitlyn about the deed when she is old enough.
When I was in high school...in a class of 27 one already had a kid and two were pregnant.
Shew, birth control is the greatest. Some people believe it's bad but it's not...BC does not kill an unborn child, it prevents the body ever having a chance of releasing an egg to sit and wait for a spermie. It doesn't affect fertility and there's no proof it affects your health. The only thing I'd worry about is my health, cancers, etc but I don't have to since there's no proof it hurts you.
I'm on Yasmin and I take it religiously everyday at 3pm. It's great to have 99.9% protection all the time. I wouldn't trust anything but hormonal birth control to prevent us from having kids. Nothing else is good enough for me.
I take my BC religiously everyday around 9. So far I've had 2 children on that .1%. Scared yet Heff? Neither of my children were planned. Fredo with a gun didn't show up this month. Tests say no but I'm not so sure. I'm going to the doctor soon. There may be another .1% chance baby on the way. My family calls me Fertile Myrtle.

I take it perfectly everyday....that's 99.9%, typical use is 95% or less.
I also don't take any meds that interact with it...so, I'm not in "danger." I'd die if I got pregnant, not something I can handle now. I also don't have sex but maybe once-twice a week, so my chances are slim to none.
My best friend took her BC everyday at the same time and NEVER missed a pill, but she now has a 5 year old daughter. She was that .1%. It's not that uncommon for that .1% to come out. Don't think that you are not going to get preggo it can happen that is why it's not 100% they leave room for leeway cause they know that it can happen.
If you take the Pill as instructed, your chance of becoming pregnant is less than one in 100. About five out of 100 women using the Pill become pregnant, but most of these pregnancies occur in women who do not correctly follow the instructions given in their pill packs.
If you vomit or diarrhea less than 4 hours after taking the pill, your protection is compromised. If you take any other medicines, you must ask your doctor about interactions....But, I'm not on anything but an occassional aspirin/tylenol, green tea pill or vitamin.
It's helped my periods but not my stupid acne! I've tried everything and NOTHING will clear it up...Guess I'll have to wait it out....
