Kisses, kisses all the time and loving so he doesn't feel like an orphan. There are times I forget that he eventually will be a BIG ram and have to live outside. I am letting him outside in a portable pen so that he can get used to it, only problem is he won't stay there without Cherokee. Poor Cherokee. We will have to castrate Joker since he was such a preemie the Vet said that there is a good chance of him being sterile and I feel it would be very dishonest to sell him as a St. Croix Breeder Ram. He should go about 170 to 225 pounds and you sure don't want him butting you. With Potato, our breeder ram, we made the mistake of making friends with him, great fun in the pasture when he decides to charge. Many bruises from him, he is about 195 lbs. I now have to arm myself with a spray bottle of vinegar and water to fend off the attacks. He does it because he wants to play. We do have a castrated ram now that is as gentle as a ewe. Didn't mean to ramble.
With dogs, you do a sperm sample at the vet. They test it for amount of live sperm, and the strength of the sperm movement. Why would you not test that preemie to see if he is fertile before castration? Just an idea, with a dog, we do that before we waste a lot of time trying to put him to the girls...
Thanks for the suggestion but with rams by the time they produce sperm and if they are not fertile they have to have surgery to castrate them. So instead of putting Joker through surgery we will just castrate him ourselves which is easier for him. They usually start producing sperm at 8 to 12 weeks, castration should be done between one and two weeks. with Joker we will wait an extra week because of his size. In way I am kinda glad because I did want to keep him and you cannot have a ram that is not castrated as a pet. We would have had to sell him if he is not castrated because our Ram has been here for a couple of years and there would really be the fights.
Oh, my Guess they are a wee bit more wild than Labradors. I never had a problem leaving nuts on a dog, and only became concerned if he did not have them [undescended testicles]. I will tell Buck he is lucky he isn't a sheep.
Oh my gosh reminds me of Lilly(poodle) when she was a pup, wandering off and I would call her and she would listen for my voice and then spot me. Like at the dog park. Gosh if lambs would stay small I would want one. He is just adorable.
