The Movie "An American Haunting" thats coming out May 5th is a true story about the Bell Witch. The Bell Witch happenings took place in Adams, TN about 12 miles from where I grew up....and where we live now (I live 2 miles from where I grew up).
I have always been facinated with this story and have visited the old Bell farm many times. For several years, we made it *ritual* to go to the Bell Witch Cave on Halloween night. The cave is located on the old Bell farm. I've also spent many a quiet moments at the Bell cemetary too!
My mother and I both always save newspaper clippings and stories we find on it. If you ever get the chance to read what fully happened, it will blow your socks off. I believe it was the father, John Bell, who was found dead on his tractor in the middle of a plowed field . The ground was freshly plowed, he was shot in the head and there was no gun (it was never found) and there were no footprints in the plowed ground (have also heard he was poisoned by the witch). This is only one of many occurances. President Jackson (on the $20 bill) also visited the Bell farm out of curiosity and was paid a harsh visit by the Bell witch as well!
This is (and I quote) "the only documented case in US history where a spirit killed another person".
I have seen trailers for the movie and it looks scary as all heck! I don't watch scarey movies, but I'm going to bring myself to go and see this one simply because the story has facinated me my whole life. My brother's 2nd born child is buried in the Bell cemetary as well. They gated off where the immediate family members were buried, and made the grounds around it a cemetary. It was only by coincidence that the baby was born there....it wasn't like "hey lets bury him with the witch".
The old Bell school also still stands and operates as an antique shop. We go there quite often to just look......some of the items are not for sale and are only displayed as historical memoribilia from the hauntings.
The original Bell house is no longer there, but whoever bought the farm built a new house on it several years ago.....in the same place. Halloween, of course, is a VERY busy time for the farm...lol.
I can't wait to see how the movie chronicles the happenings from that place. It was a very brutal story.
I didn't even know till last week that they had made a movie about it! This is just so cool!
That is neat. I hope they did a good job on the movie. Spirits generally can only harm you with your own cooperation, I doubt any psychic force is strong enough to shoot anyone, that sounds a bit like hooey to me. Did you watch Medium's new episodes this, and last Monday? Now there is fiction that I just love. They seem to have good writers, because I just love those stories...
The Bell Witch happened from 1817 to 1821 (I believe) and a lot of hog wash has been applied to it since then.....so some of what I said above could be just that.....
I do hope they do a good job on the movie as well.......supposedly they are trying to base it on what there is actual documentation of......if it gets too far fetched, it will never be believable.
On the other hand.......you just ended a journey for me that I've been on for several years....lol. Back in 1999 I had the infamous WebTV and we were allowed to spruce up our email on there...(boy we thought we were the bomb)......the image you posted......of the Michael Myers looking guy in the window with the lightning flashing.....was in the signature of my email. I lived in Louisiana then and moved back to TN in early 2000. I ditched the WebTV and got a computer only never to be able to find that image again. I swear to you, I have searched for over 5 years for that image...lol.
I've scraped every Halloween site I could find and used numerous search terms to try and find it. When I saw it just now, my mouth fell open....lol
Dang you Kitty!...lol. You always know where to find the good stuff, but thank you none-the-less for putting an end to my creepy-guy-image-hunt that has spanned over a half a decade!...lol
When I have the time, I pull up a second browser window that I put the Best Smiley page index on. http://bestsmileys.com/pageindex.htm I can illustrate posts just by copy and paste from thousands of images. There is no problem with band width on his site, which seems Christian oriented, so it is easy to use.
