Problem ( Added Pics )

Ok 2 days ago i noticed trinity had a swollowen thing in her ear full of liquid. We called the vet and they said for us to try and pop it. I posted about this on a doberman forum and i'm sry but they seemed kind of rude to me at times so i figured i would come over here and just cross post it.

I hope the ear isn't too bad.  I've never had a pet with an ear hematoma.  It doesn't look too comfortable, but the pictures are kinda hard to see, so I'm not sure if I'm seeing what I'm supposed to be seeing.  Please give us an update on Trinity when you have a chance.

None of my dogs have ever had a hematoma but one of my cats did.  It was a bad one and the vet had to open her ear and put in a drain.  Then he stitched her ear, putting stitches even where it wasn't cut (sort of like how they put stitches in quilts) to keep the 2 layers of ear together so that it wouldn't fill up again.

I hope Trinity made out OK at the vet and it is something very minor.

Ok so it is a Hematoma but its not a minor one. The vet said its a sever one he even came in 3 times to remind and press at how bad it is. Yea i tried the best with the pics i had to take them with my webcam. Banfield quoted me 1,041.61 - 1,301.32 and they dont do payment plans. So my room mate told us about this vets office called Noah's Ark and they do payment plans we tried to call them today when I got home but they were already closed so we are going to call them tomorrow.

that much for ear hematoma surgery?? All they do is slit the inside flap of the ear, drain the blood and sew it up. I've watched one at the clinic I work at and it's not even $100. You're getting ripped off. Definitely find somewhere that does payment plans.

Listen to Heff.
Shop around.
With the money you already paid for the diagnosis, use the "professional diagnosis" as your tool when calling around for estimates. Talk to everyone, inc. humane society type orgs- they may offer services at a discount that is funded elsewhere. If you are low income, press that point, and be very open about what services you are trying to get- at what price. Of course, don't tell future possibilities about what other prices you have been offered, keep it impartial.

Ok so i just called Noahs Ark. I decided since she has to be put under to go ahead and get her fixed at the same time. Noahs Ark said it would be about $225 for her ear and $70 to fix her. I'm going to call my mother in a bit once i know shes at work and talk to her about it. The bad thing is they said they only do surgery on Monday, Tuesday, Wenesday, and Friday ( they are closed thursday ) and since todays friday and you have to make an appointment ahead of time then we might have to take her in monday. Also these are the prices they told us over the phone they havent looked at trinity yet and my room mate said she is unsure if they will allow me to do payment plans. She is going to go with me whenever i take her in to see if since she is there and we know her they will let us do payment plans.

I still have to talk to my mother about wheather we go to them or what.

Good luck. Sounds like a good deal, just make sure they don't intend to charge extra for anesthesia, or anything. Ask if the price includes EVERYTHING.
I just spent $450. at the vet yesterday, doing x-rays on two of my dogs.

450?? for how many views? For one large, 2 view at work, it's 75-85. And like 30 something per small view.

Found a solution no vet decided to tell me about. I finally decided to call some 24 hour vet places tonight and all have told me about Care Credit.

http://carecredit.com/

I looked into it and it is really good. I'm still wondering why it took this long for ppl to tell me about this thing.

I took trinity to a couple of other vets today as well to see what they might say. Shockingly enough they wouldnt recommand any other vet but yet no one seems to be able to get her in till tuesday. I miss the old days where if you went to a vet adn they said that something had to be taken care of soon but yet they couldnt take you till tuesday they would recommand another place that might help you. I miss when vets cared more about the animals well being then there own business.

RE: Problem (updated June-17)

It was for 2 hip xrays, two elbow x-rays, $20. for a copy of the hips on the girl, and $35. to OFA. It is for genetic certification for testing breeding quality.

PD...Too bad you aren't here in So. Cal, the service is excellent at Dr. Butchko's in Riverside. No appt... 7 days a week, 5 vets, many technicians, and dirt cheap prices, a third of the price of my local vets. VERY professional service, too. I always feel lucky to do business with them. Riverside is a kinda out of town area, here. You might check out CLINICS in poorer areas, they have cheaper prices, and things like Banfield, and VCA-corporations, over-charge the big bucks compared to private folks that have to give good service to keep themselves protected, they don't have big corporate insurance. A lot of Universities have cheap medical rates, but students and teachers do the work. I had my tooth pulled at USC. A near graduate student did the work, under direct supervision of an instructor, and with two new students [who were absolutely thrilled to be there] observing.
It was a big $50. bucks, total. The kid that pulled my tooth was trying so hard to do a good job, I can't help but think his service was better than an experienced dentist that does that stuff all day long. He shook my hand on the way in, and out, and walked me out of the building...was pretty excited about being able to perform an actual extraction [last molar]. The instructor being there, it was like getting two dentists for the price of one....

Yea 1 strang thing that alot of vets have started doing around here is that they only do surgerys during the week and give out shots on the weekend.

there is a vet place off of 30 and beltline across from the Krogers that is suppose to be very resonable on price and have good dr's.  My friends grandparents use them.  There is also a vet I took my dog to friday just past 80 and beltline in sunnyvale.  they were very nice, but the vet wasn't in the room long, but it was cheaper and cleaner then may old vet.

I'm glad you were able to work out a way for her to get the surgery.  When she gets home, give her extra hugs from me.

OK trinity is home safe and sound. I asked the vet if her ear was as bad as it looked and they said yea. Right now shes still a little drugged up and has a hard plastic piece stapled or something to the back of her ear to keep it stiff while it heals. I take her back in 2 weeks to have the plastic piece removed. The total cost for this getting her fixed and everything didnt go over $220.
